INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team was firing on all cylinders today, nearly sweeping IUPUI in claiming a 6-1 victory Sunday afternoon at West Indy Raquet Club.
The Panthers (9-11, 3-3 Horizon League) dominated doubles for the second time in 24 hours and then just missed the sweep in singles action against the Jaguars (8-12, 0-6 Horizon League) to complete a perfect 2-0 weekend on the road.
"We have everyone playing solid tennis and getting healthy at the right time of the season," head coach
Mark Goldin said. "That's two big conference match victories to end the regular season and clinch the No. 4 seed for the conference tournament next weekend."
The doubles play continued its dominant weekend effort, with a pair of 6-2 decisions today that followed a set of 6-1 results Saturday. Against the Jags, it was
Laure Razet and
Sara Simonova defeating Elle Kotre and Gabbie Orlando (at No. 2) and
Iva Stejskalova and
Emilia Durska handling Jordyn Pax and Sofia Castillo (No. 3) in impressive fashion.
Babette Burgersdijk got hurt in doubles and was replaced by Stejskalova in the singles lineup. The steady senior came up big, following her doubles victory with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph at No. 6.
Following the start of singles action, Durska finished first to get it to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of Pax. Razet quickly followed, handling Kotre 6-3, 6-2, to give MKE the 3-0 advantage.
Nadiia Konieva moved up to play No. 1 and came through at the top of the lineup, knocking off Chloe Bailey 6-2, 6-3 to clinch the victory for Milwaukee.
"Babs (Babbette) sat out of singles with a groin strain and Iva really stepped up, winning both singles and doubles on the day," Goldin said. "And Nadiia came through with the clinch for us today, winning both her singles matches this weekend."
Evelina Anastasi topped Gabbie Orlando at No. 5, 6-4, 6-0.
Sara Simonova just missed out completing the sweep on the day, falling in a third set tiebreaker after winning set one.
The top six teams in the final standings will participate in the Horizon League Tournament, taking place April 26-28 at Schwartz Tennis Center in West Lafayette, Ind. The Panthers will head to the postseason as the No. 4 seed.
"We will use this week to prepare for each individual matchup and look forward to carrying this momentum we are building into next weekend," Goldin said.
