MADISON, Wis. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team ran into a red-hot Wisconsin program Saturday evening, dropping a 7-0 decision despite strong play at numerous spots during the in-state matchup at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Panthers (6-6) saw their two-match win streak snapped by the Badgers (12-2), who came into the day ranked No. 25 in the ITA rankings and won for the ninth time in a row on the season while extending their perfect home ledger to 6-0 in the process.
"The scores did not reflect how hard the Panthers battled today," head coach
Mark Goldin said. "We fought hard until the last point in every match and made the Badgers earn every point they won."
Wisconsin jumped on MKE early, grabbing the quick doubles point to fully take hold of momentum going into singles action.
"This is the most talented Badger team I have seen and it was a great experience to come to Madison for this match," Goldin said. "We enjoyed the battle and we will live with the result knowing that we competed hard."
Emilia Durska showed well, taking the first set off of Kaja Jacobson at No. 5 before Jacobson rallied back to win in a third-set tiebreaker, 4-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Sara Simonova battled Ariel Johnson point-for-point at No. 4, falling 6-4, 6-3.
In No. 2 singles,
Nadiia Konieva saw her 10-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of Taylor Cataldi, 6-1, 6-3.
Up next, the team will head south for a pair of matches, starting with a visit to Chattanooga Wednesday. Start time is set for 1 p.m. CT against the Mocs.
"We are looking forward to our tough road schedule ahead next week in hopes to continue to raise our level of play so we are ready for the start of Horizon League conference play at the end of the month," Goldin said.
