Panthers Turned Away in Series Finale at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. – Solo runs for Fresno State in the second and sixth innings proved to be all Fresno State needed as the Bulldogs picked up the Sunday afternoon win over the Milwaukee baseball team by a 2-0 score.

Fresno State scratched a run across off Milwaukee starter Gavin Theis in the second inning, before a solo home run in the sixth added insurance for the home team as the Panthers fell to 0-3 on the young season.

"Leaving Fresno, I'm encouraged with our team's resilience and fight," noted head coach Shaun Wegner post game. "There were a lot of positives we can carry into a good, focused week of practice and head into our series next weekend in Texas."

The Panthers outhit the Bulldogs by a 6-5 margin but were unable to string together any offensive rallies. Milwaukee drew just one walk and hit into one double play while stranding six runners on base. "There were a few opportunities where we could have scratched a run across, but ultimately they came up short," Wegner added.

Sean Tillmon led the offense with two hits to up his season average to .417 in his first year with the Panthers.

Theis made his first career start on the hill and tossed a career-high 5 2/3 innings but was touched up for the two Fresno State runs as he suffered the loss. "Gavin did a good job of using the edges and working with a quick tempo that was able to disrupt their timing a bit," Wegner said of his starter.

Tristan Arnold made his collegiate debut and allowed one hit over his 1 1/3 innings, while Owen Rice made his season debut and worked around a walk and a hit as he stranded two Bulldogs. "Tristan showed poise and will build confidence going into next weekend," Wegner continued, "Owen finished up and we look forward to getting him into more action as the season progresses."

Jack Anker picked up the win for Fresno State as he went the first six innings and struck out five Panthers. Aidan Cremarosa and Tommy Hopfe combined for the final three innings to help the Bulldogs to the shutout. Marco Pirruccello picked up the first RBI in the second with a groundout, while Grady Morgan added the insurance run late with a solo home run.

Milwaukee returns to the central time zone for its next series, which takes place at Texas Rio Grande Valley. The Panthers will play the Vaqueros for the first time in program history beginning with the opening game of the three-game series on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
