Panthers Find Equalizer To Earn 1-1 Draw At Green Bay

Team will host a postseason contest Sunday

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Daiki Kumakawa scored the game-tying goal in the 60th minute and goalkeeper Daniel Ibarra made a brilliant save in the closing moments of the contest to help the Milwaukee men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against Green Bay at Aldo Santaga Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers (8-4-5, 4-3-2 Horizon League) ran their unbeaten streak to three consecutive with the draw with the Phoenix (10-6-2, 4-3-2 Horizon League), but the result did allow GB to retain possession of the "Chancellor's Cup".

With the decision, Milwaukee finishes in a three-way tie for second place in the final Horizon League regular-season standings, resulting in the No. 3 seed after tiebreakers played out.

"It's always a hard game with Green Bay," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "On top of it, it was a road game and both teams were fighting for that higher seed. We accept that third seed, we are excited, and look forward to playing a home game on Sunday."

The Panthers did come out the aggressor, recording five of the first seven shots of the match including a few decent looks from Alejandro Martinez. Jack Wagner also just missed a header off a corner kick in the 16th minute yet the game remained scoreless.

The Phoenix wasn't getting a lot of shot attempts but were creating some chaos, earning corner kick after corner kick. Eventually they found a way to net a goal on what was their seventh corner of the match at the 29:50 mark.

From there, the GB offense picked things up, ending the opening period with a 10-4 advantage in shots yet still the 1-0 scoreline after Ibarra made a highlight-reel save on a 41st minute free kick from 20 yards out, using a full-out dive to knock the ball wide.

"I thought the first 20 minutes of the game were pretty good," Kelderman said. "I thought we were catching them in transition and we created at least two very good opportunities. One I thought for sure we should have scored on when we had a break with the keeper and the goalie made a nice save. As soon as they got their goal on a restart, the momentum did shift a bit. Kudos to our guys to keep fighting and get that goal back. But I did think that as the game went on, we had our hands full as far as trying to dissipate Green Bay's attack. I thought our back line had the best performance of our group today. They did have to deal with some pressure as the game went on."

The team finally broke through, making something out of a bit of nothing in the 60th minute. David Cox won possession and headed upfield, but had his pass disrupted by the defense. Jack Bowden picked up the loose ball and sent a perfect ball over the top to Kumakawa, who took one touch to settle before sending a laser into the back of the net to make it a new game at 1-1 at the 59:25 mark.

The Panthers didn't get much to develop the rest of the way, but nearly had the winner in the 80th. It was Cox again, this time charging down the right side. He sent a square ball through the box for Bienvenu Djunga to run on to, only to see his shot attempt crack off the left post and go back into play at the 79:01 mark.

Ibarra was credited with four saves overall, including the final stop of a well-placed shot from the top of the 18 with just 13 seconds left to preserve the 1-1 deadlock and keep MKE in the third seed position for the postseason.

For the game, the home team managed advantages of 19-7 in shots, 5-3 in shots on frame, and 14-3 in corner kicks, while maintaining 65 percent of possession overall. Martinez and Djunga paced the visitors with two shots apiece.

As the No. 3 seed, the Panthers will play host to No. 6 seed Purdue Fort Wayne in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament coming up this Sunday. Game time from Engelmann Stadium is set for 1 p.m.
