IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Milwaukee baseball team faced a tough foe on Wednesday afternoon in the Iowa Hawkeyes, as it was the home team to win the single game by the score of 12-1.
Â
"I love the way we started the game," said head coach
Scott Doffek. "I through Andy [Neu] threw it well in some tough conditions."
"From there on out we just did not execute on the mound, and we didn't give ourselves a chance to compete for a result," added Doffek. "We have a huge weekend ahead, so we have to move on and get ready to play Friday."
Â
Andy Neu performed well through his first three innings of work, neutralizing the Hawkeye bats, and stranding just a runner in scoring position in each inning.
Â
Jake Novak and
Jack Thelen reached on two-out singles in the top of the second, but the Panther offense was not able to score in the inning.
Â
In the top of the fourth, the Panthers got another two-out rally going as
Justin Hausser walked on five pitches. Up next was Novak, who doubled to chase Hausser home with the first run of the game.
Â
Iowa answered right back in the bottom of the inning with four runs, chasing Neu in the process. The Hawkeyes added eight runs in the bottom of the fifth as the home team extended its lead to 12-1.
Â
Aaron Chapman walked with one down in the sixth, and
Carson Hansen reached on a two-out single in the seventh, but it was not enough as the Panthers were unable to string together any offensive attack against eight Hawkeye pitchers.
Â
Milwaukee will look to get back to its winning ways on Friday when the team travels to Purdue Fort Wayne for a key conference series. The set will begin at 2:00 p.m. (CT) on Friday in Indiana.
