Panthers Settle For 0-0 Draw At Western Illinois

Team dominated game but cannot break thru

MACOMB, Ill. – The Milwaukee women's soccer team recorded 21 shots and 11 corner kicks but was unable to find a goal in settling for a 0-0 draw with Western Illinois Friday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.

The Panthers (2-1-1) dominated the Leathernecks (0-1-3) from start to finish, nearly pulling off a late score on an 89th-minute corner kick while controlling over 60 percent of possession on the day.

"We are attacking in a variety of ways and getting to goal in multiple, dangerous ways and creating chances … we are just not finishing those chances," head coach Kevin Boyd said.

In goal, Parker Donahugh led the defensive charge, making three saves in recording her third shutout of the 2022 campaign.

Scoring opportunities came throughout the afternoon, with the team hitting the crossbar or post two more times today, including in the 78th minute when Kayla Rollins beat the keeper but caught a piece of the right frame.

"It's technical, it's lack of composure; some of that," Boyd said about not finishing chances. "But when you look at the last two games, we've had 52 shots in two games and scored two goals. Today it was an issue of 21 shots, but only four of those went on frame. One hit the crossbar, one hit the post, so those weren't even counted in the four saves the goalkeeper made – and we whiffed the ball twice inside the box as well. That's where we are. We are creating great chances and just aren't finishing. You have to think that if we keep creating these types of chances, the ball is going to start going in, so I expect that to happen."

A minute prior to that, Trudy Quidzinski's well-placed pass left Molly O'Regan open in the box, only to see that 1-on-1 attempt skip left of the target.

Brooke Parnello had an open look from the top of the 18 but put it high in the 76th, while Kat Van Booven had a breakaway chance turned away nicely after getting sprung on a pass from midfield in the 61st.

WIU's Isabel Navas Rodriguez made four saves overall, keeping the high-powered MKE offense off the board for the day.

"The team is not happy," Boyd said. "We walk away with a shutout tie and feel like it's a loss, which is good that is the expectation that they have – they believe they should be winning more games like this. And we should have – credit to the opponent, they played hard and were better in the second half and the game became wide open. We need to get reset and get our focus on Sunday. We have to try and recover quickly, have a drive to make tonight, get into a new hotel, and then tomorrow get out there and knock the ball around a little bit with a light practice. At this point we want to come home with a win on Sunday to go along with this tie."

The first half was more of the same, with the Panthers accounting for 12 of their shots over the first 45 minutes. Breanna Culver and Quidzinski forced tough saves over the final minutes of the period, while Donahugh made a quality stop of her own against the run of play in the 42nd minute to keep it deadlocked before intermission.

Milwaukee had several quality looks in the first half, with O'Regan (41st) and Payton Green (39th) narrowly missing finding the back of the net as well as seeing a great header off a free kick by Haley Johnson clang off the crossbar at the 6:16 mark.

MKE ended the day with advantages of 21-8 in shots and 11-2 in corner kicks, with Johnson recording a team-high four attempts; Parnello was next with three.

Up next, the team heads to Illinois State Sunday, set for a 1 p.m. kickoff against the Redbirds.
