Head coach
Kris Kelderman announced the full schedule today, which also includes a home-heavy start to the season as well as a challenging non-league road game at Northwestern in mid-October.
The 2022 campaign, which will mark season No. 11 for Kelderman, gets underway with a trio of exhibition matches, starting with MKE hosting Parkside Aug. 13. A short trip to Chicago to take on Loyola awaits Aug. 17, with the practice season wrapping with a home game against DePaul Aug. 20.
The regular season gets started the final weekend of August, heading to the John Rennie Invitational on the campus of Duke University in Durham, N.C. Not only does it mark the first time the Panthers will take on the Blue Devils, but the weekend is full of challenges. It starts with Top-40 RPI opponent Elon Aug. 26, a team that played in the Colonial Athletic Association championship. Then, two days later, it's a matchup with the host, taking on a Duke squad that went 14-5-1 last fall and finished No. 12 in the United Soccer Coaches Association poll.
The home slate gets underway hosting Wisconsin Sept. 1, the first of four straight at Engelmann Stadium. That is followed by Drake Sept. 9, Western Illinois Sept. 13, and then the Horizon League opener against Robert Morris Sept. 17.
Following what will be a three-year hiatus by the time the game is played, the battle for the "Milwaukee Cup" returns Sept. 20, with the Panthers and Golden Eagles set to play for the first time since a 2-1 MKE win on September 17, 2019. The Panthers currently possess the Cup and have gone 3-0-2 the past five meetings to hold on to it.
It's back to conference action to close September, traveling to take on a Cleveland State team that just missed out on the regular-season title last fall after going 8-2 in league play. Then it's back home for a pair, hosting Wright State Sept. 28 followed by IUPUI to open October.
A break in league play takes Milwaukee down to DeKalb in search of the "LeWang Cup" Oct. 5, something the Huskies have held since 2017 (the two teams did not play in 2020). NIU went 15-3-2 a year ago and finished ranked No. 21 in the country.
It's back-to-back Cup games on the slate, with a road trip to Green Bay to play for more hardware three days later. The Panthers hold the trophy after scoring just 91 seconds into the match last fall and making it stand up in a 1-0 decision.
The team returns home to play Detroit Mercy Oct. 15 before making road trips to battle Northwestern Oct. 18 and Northern Kentucky Oct. 22. The final home game brings Oakland to town, winner of the 2021 Horizon League regular-season (8-1-1) and tournament titles (3-1 over CSU) after posting a 12-7-2 mark overall. The regular season then concludes with a final road trip to play Purdue Fort Wayne Nov. 2.
The Horizon League Tournament gets underway the following week, with the title game set for November 12.
