Panthers Lights Out in Win over Robert Morris

MKE shot 65.9 percent in the victory

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Behind the second-best shooting percentage in school history, the Milwaukee women's basketball team toppled Robert Morris 68-48 at the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (9-11, 8-5 Horizon League) knocked down 65.9 percent of their shots on Thursday night which sits as the second-best field goal percentage in program history behind a mark of 69.4 percent from March 15, 2018.

"It was awesome to see us keep that confidence going from the previous weekend," head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "Right now, we are playing some really good basketball on the offensive side."

Megan Walstad and Sydney Staver both set season highs, combining for 40 points in the victory. Walstad recorded her sixth double-double of the season, totaling 23 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

"Megan is playing at a different level. She wants the ball more, she's more aggressive and competitive," Rechlicz continued. "I thought she had a unbelievable game."

Shots were falling early on for the Panthers, who went 13-for-20 in the first half behind nine points from Walstad and seven apiece from Staver and Emma Wittmershaus.

The Colonials (9-for-11, 7-8 Horizon League) were sticking around, however, taking advantage of offensive rebounds and Panthers' turnovers to pull within three at the half.

Walstad then took over in the third to ignite MKE. The redshirt sophomore scored 10 points on an 18-4 Panthers' run to put Milwaukee in control 49-32.

RMU cut its deficit to single digits with 9:50 left in the fourth, but Staver scored seven of the next nine points, putting MKE in the driver's seat 60-42.

From there, Milwaukee emptied the bench and took care of the ball down the stretch for the win.

Milwaukee also set a new season best with 20 assists and matched its best output from long range, hitting eight triples.

Staver finished with 17 points on 7-for-9 shooting including a 3-for-3 performance from long range.

"She has an edge to her right now. It's really fun even just getting shots up with her. It's great to see that confidence and that spark in her," Rechlicz said.

McKaela Schmelzer also hit all three of her three-point attempts and added four assists. Wittmershaus also had nine points to go with three rebounds.

The Panthers will next host Youngstown State this Saturday, February 5 at 1:00 pm.
