HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Milwaukee baseball team wasted no time breaking out the bats, tallying 21 hits in a 16-9 victory at Alabama A&M in the season opener.
"It was good to get outside for the first time, that's for sure," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We did some nice things but also have a lot to clean up. Riley [Frey] came out throwing the ball well."
It marks the Panthers' first season-opening win since 2019 when MKE topped Marshall 5-3. The 21 hits mark the most since MKE recorded 22 in a win against Lakeland on April 2, 2019.
"In general, it was good to get the jitters out for some new guys and get our cleats in the dirt," Doffek commented, "Excited for another opportunity tomorrow."
Riley Frey earned the nod for the season opener and tossed five innings, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing just one earned run.
The Panthers rallied for eight runs in the second inning and piled on from there, adding six in the third to take a big lead.
Mitchell Buban finished the game 4-for-6 with a home run to lead the offense.
Conner Goodman reached base five times with three hits and a pair of walks.
Game two of the three-game series is set for 1:00 pm CT from Huntsville, Alabama.
Jack Mahoney will get the start for MKE.
