Fourth Quarter Run Seals Win Over Phoenix

MKE held Green Bay scoreless over the final 5:55

MILWAUKEE, Wis.  – A go-ahead three-pointer by Angie Cera helped spark a 13-0 run to end the game as the Milwaukee women's basketball team took down Green Bay 59-52 in Thursday's Horizon League opener.

The Panthers trailed by five entering the fourth quarter but held Green Bay to just 1-for-14 shooting in the fourth including a scoreless 5:55 to end the game and seal the win.

"Big win for us tonight. I thought our team came out and competed. Our post players were phenomenal this game," head coach Kyle Rechlicz said.

Emma Wittmershaus and Megan Walstad combined for 29 points and 20 rebounds inside and helped Panthers (3-4, 1-0 Horizon League) dominate the boards 41-29.

"Emma stepped up and hit some huge shots and I'm super proud of how she played. Megan Walstad was demanding the ball in the paint," Rechlicz continued. "Kendall Nead came in and was getting some flash opportunities early. The standout tonight was our defense. Our staff did an excellent job getting our team prepared but our team was so locked in."

Cera hit a jumper to pull the Panthers within two with 3:53 on the clock and drilled a triple on the next possession to put Milwaukee up for good. She finished with six points, three rebounds, and two assists.

Walstad got it going early for the Panthers, hitting all three shot attempts in the first quarter for seven points to put MKE in front 12-10 after one.

In the second, the Panthers used a 7-0 run to push their lead to double digits, capped with a Jessi Giles three-pointer.

Green Bay (3-3, 0-1 Horizon League) fought back to cut the halftime deficit to four and outscored Milwaukee 19-10 in the third before the Panthers' defense stood tall.

Nead finished with 10 points on 5-for-10 shooting and added three rebounds and three assists.

Walstad totaled 15 points and nine rebounds while Wittmershaus recorded a double-double of 14 points and nine boards.

Milwaukee also bounced back at the free throw line, going 11-for-14 for the game including 6-for-8 in the fourth to help seal the victory.

The Panthers will next head to Indianapolis on Monday, December 5 to take on IUPUI at 6:00 pm CT.
