FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Purdue Fort Wayne scored four goals in the second half to flip the match around and claim a 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee men's soccer team Wednesday afternoon at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
The Panthers (1-8-8, 0-4-5 Horizon League) led 2-1 at intermission only to see the Mastodons (2-10-3, 1-6-2 Horizon League) click on offense over the final 45 minutes to take the victory.
Milwaukee led the game early, 1-0, and was ahead 2-1 as the second half started. Purdue Fort Wayne used a quick strike to draw level again in the 48
th minute before taking a 3-2 advantage 20 minutes later.
Down, but not out, Milwaukee clawed its way back into it and evened the score for the third time on the day on an impressive goal from
Logan Farrington from a tough angle at the 69:24 mark. It was all Dons the rest of the way, however, forging back ahead in the 73
rd minute before adding an insurance tally in the 86
th to close out the scoring.
The Panthers used some early pressure to convert on an impressive combination of passes in the 15
th minute. Farrington carried into the box, finding
Emil Lindgren Pedersen. A touch to
Gabe Anguil was followed by a pretty backheel pass to
Raul Medina – firing a left-footed shot into the upper right up the goal for the 1-0 lead at the 14:47 mark.
The Dons tied it up on a corner kick at the 28:31 mark, but Milwaukee had an immediate response. Following the kick-off, the offense charged ahead, with Farrington taking a pass from Anguil and speeding down the left side. He was knocked off the ball inside the box, with the foul resulting in a penalty kick. Lindgren Pedersen then calmy put MKE back in front just 29 seconds later, netting his sixth goal of the campaign to make it 2-1 at the time.
For the game, shots finished 26-11 overall in favor of the home team as well as 15-5 in shots on goal. Medina led the offense with three attempts. In goal,
Gijs Van Schouten finished with a season-high nine saves. PFW also earned nine of the 14 corner kicks on the afternoon.
Today's match marked the end of the 2022 campaign for the Panthers.
