Big Runs Help CSU Top MKE in Tourney

DAYTON, Ohio – The Milwaukee volleyball team had a hard time getting anything going offensively, falling 3-0 to Cleveland State in the Horizon League Quarterfinals on Friday night.

MKE was held to a .073 attack percentage and committed 25 errors while the Vikings racked up 18 blocks, a season-high for opponents.

Kara Erdmann piled up a career-high 28 digs, matching Jess Grabowski for third most in a three-set match in program history.

After trading points early in set one, Ari Miller and Madi Malone combined for three kills to put MKE up 15-14 at the media timeout.

Cleveland State bounced back with a 7-0 run from there to control the set 21-15. From there, the Vikings secured the set 25-18 thanks to just one attack error and 10 total team blocks.

Another big Cleveland State run did the damage in set two, rattling off 10 straight to pull in front 21-8.  MKE pushed late and cut the gap to eight, but it was too late as the Vikings grabbed a 25-16 win.

In the third, the Vikings scored the first three points and Milwaukee could not seem to get over the hump and played from behind for the majority of the set.

Bri Geurts and Natalie Schmitz recorded consecutive kills to pull within one at 18-17 but a 5-1 CSU spurt helped push the Vikings to a 25-20 win.

Schmitz reached double figures with 10 kills while Miller recorded nine while hitting .304.

Kaley Blake and Josie Johnson combined for 31 assists and five digs.

Milwaukee finished the season 10-20 overall and 9-9 in Horizon League play.
