MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Marquette capitalized on a big rebounding advantage to top the Milwaukee women's basketball team 73-47 on Sunday afternoon.
"I've never seen us get out-rebounded the way we did this game," head coach
Kyle Rechlicz said. "The physicality – we wilted under it and need to do a better job of understanding out responsibilities and boxing out. The just wanted the ball more than us."
The Golden Eagles (3-0) hauled in 58 rebounds compared to 26 for Milwaukee. Marquette's 24 offensive boards turned into for 20 second-chance points.
Milwaukee (1-2) was on the board first but couldn't get much to fall in the first quarter, going 3-for-11 from the field. The Panthers were held without a field goal for a stretch of 9:15 across the first and second periods as Marquette pulled in front 21-12 after one.
The Panthers did a better job on defense in the second, holding the Golden Eagles to 33.3 percent shooting, but Marquette continued to pound the glass. MU pulled in 14 rebounds to MKE's six to double up Milwaukee in the second.
Jessi Giles found the range late with triples on consecutive possessions, but Marquette responded with a three-pointer at the buzzer and pulled in front 41-22 at the break.
Emma Wittmershaus got to work after halftime, getting back-to-back layups to fall and
Angie Cera followed with a three-pointer, but MKE struggled offensively the rest of the third. The Panthers finished just 1-for-12 from the floor over the final seven minutes as Marquette increased its lead to 59-33.
Milwaukee finished shooting 50 percent in the fourth quarter but went 2-for-8 at the free throw line in the final 10 minutes and could not make up any ground, falling in its first road contest.
Wittmershaus led MKE with 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting and added four rebounds and two blocks.
Kamy Peppler knocked down all four of her free throw attempts as she finished with eight points, three rebounds, and a team-high four assists.
The Panthers next head to UIC on Wednesday, November 16 for a 7:00 pm contest.
