GREEN BAY, Wis. – Raul Medina scored a goal in the 83
rd minute and
Gijs Van Schouten made a key save in the final minute of the match to help the Milwaukee men's soccer team earn a 1-1 draw against Green Bay Saturday evening at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
The Panthers (1-6-5, 0-2-3 Horizon League) played a much better game in the second half against the Phoenix (5-2-4, 1-1-2 Horizon League), finding a late equalizer in addition to several other quality chances that nearly brought home a comeback victory. With the draw, the team does maintain possession of the "Chancellor's Cup".
Medina created the start of the scoring play, carrying the ball from beyond midfield before finding
Emil Lindgren Pedersen down the left side. Medina charged into the box and one-timed a perfect lead pass, scoring his third goal of the season at the 82:18 mark despite a heavy collision with the GB defender.
In the final minute, Milwaukee had an opportunity in front of goal, but could not get a shot off. Green Bay went the other way and had a chance on a breakaway, but Van Schouten came off his line and sent the shot away to preserve the draw with just 38 seconds left on the clock.
Milwaukee has now tied the program record for draws in a season, equaling the mark of five established in 2005 and matched in 2008.
The MKE offense came out much stronger in the second half, with Lindgren Pederson forcing a tough save on a header in the 68
th minute to nearly draw even.
A second yellow to a Phoenix defender forced the home team to play down a man from the 78:27 mark and the situation seemed to give a bit more pep to the MKE chances.
Logan Farrington volleyed a pass from Medina after settling off his chest just wide right of the post in the 82
nd before Medina would score on the next possession.
The Panthers were down 1-0 at the break after GB scored through traffic in the 12
th minute but certainly had the better of it in outshooting the Phoenix 6-5 in the opening period.
Lindgren Pedersen was turned away on a quality stop at the post while attempting to finish a lead pass from
Gabe Anguil in the 19
th minute and Farrington nearly had his sixth goal of the season in the 31
st – only to see a spectacular diving effort push the attempt just wide at the post.
Van Schouten finished the contest with three saves, with the other two just as impressive early in the contest. He tipped a shot over the crossbar in the fifth minute and came up with a highlight-reel stop of his own on a GB header in the 14
th minute as well.
For the game, Milwaukee finished with advantages of 14-8 in shots and 8-4 in shots on goal, while earning two of the five corner kicks. A trio of Panthers (Farrington, Medina, and Lindgren Pederson) led the way with three shots apiece.
Just one game on the schedule next, with the Panthers back home to take on Detroit Mercy Saturday. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
