VERMILLION, S.D. – Behind an impressive, season-best line of 41-7-77 (.442), the Milwaukee volleyball team made quick work of Central Arkansas on Saturday morning and picked up its first sweep of the year.
Rylie Vaughn and
Ari Miller were named to the South Dakota Classic All-Tournament Team. Vaughn totaled 72 assists (6.0/set) and 21 digs (1.75/set) while Miller put away 30 kills at a .375 clip and added 14 blocks.
"I felt like the team responded really well from last night," head coach
Susie Johnson commented. "I'm really proud of them for responding and having action today. It was a total team effort and we played very cohesively which is a great sign after a tough loss."
MKE (4-5) got it rolling early landing its first four kills to pull in front 5-2 and never looked back. The Panthers hit .542 with just one miscue in the opening set on their way to a 25-11 victory.
It was a similar story in the second set as the Panther used big runs to put away Central Arkansas (1-5). MKE had an early six-point rally and up 9-5, scored seven in a row to fuel the fire and earn a 25-15 set-two win.
In the third, the Golden Bears took an early lead, but
Kaley Blake served seven straight and Milwaukee jumped in front 13-9. Vaughn then served up an 8-0 run as Milwaukee put away the sweep.
The Panthers defense was solid, holding Central Arkansas to a .012 hitting percentage behind 10 total block and 35 digs.
Miller and
Madi Malone each totaled nine kills for Milwaukee, hitting .615 and .467, respectively.
Carmen Heilemann bounced back with a 7-0-11 (.636) and added four block assists in the sweep.
The setter duo of Vaughn and Blake combined for 32 assists, 11 digs, and three aces.
Milwaukee will next gear up for one final non-conference tournament before diving into Horizon League action. The Panthers head to Indianapolis for the Bulldog Brawl beginning on Friday, September 17.
