Mahoney’s Gem Leads Milwaukee Past UIC, 3-0

Teams will wrap up the series Sunday

CHICAGO, Ill. – Jack Mahoney threw 7.2 shutout innings to lead the Milwaukee baseball team to a 3-0 victory over UIC Saturday at Curtis Granderson Stadium.

The Panthers plated single runs in the first, second, and fourth innings against the Flames and the pitching staff did the rest, led by Mahoney's impressive outing.

"I'm happy for the guys to get one, they have played their hearts out down here," head coach Scott Doffek said. "Another great start on the mound today, Jack was in control from the first pitch on."

Mahoney worked into the eighth inning, allowing just five hits. He walked two and struck out six batters in the outing. Not a single Flame baserunner made it to third base and the defense turned three double plays behind him.

"We played really solid defense behind him all day," Doffek said. "I thought their guy was good on the mound as well, we did just enough with the bats. It was good to see us have some quality situational at bats to push a couple runs across."

The offense pounded out 10 hits, led by Luke Seidel's 3-for-5 outing. Jack Thelen also added a multi-hit day, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Milwaukee got on the board immediately. Seidel laced the first pitch of the game down the left field line for a double and came home one out later on Zach Nogalski's groundout.

They doubled the lead in the second inning when Thelen led off with a single and eventually scored on another single by Joe Vyskocil.

The final tally came in the fourth, with Thelen doubling and then scoring on Jack Kraus' sacrifice fly.

That was all the staff would need. Matt McCarty came on in the eighth, getting the final four outs for the save. He walked one and struck out three.

The teams wrap up the series tomorrow, set for a first pitch of 12:05 p.m.
