FORT MYERS, Fla. – Yale slowly pulled away from the Milwaukee men's basketball team in the second half in claiming a 69-56 victory in the Rocket Mortgage Fort Myers Tip-Off Wednesday afternoon at Suncoast Credit Union Arena.
The Panthers (1-4) were down just a point at the break, only to see the Bulldogs (4-3) take control to start the second half in slowly building a lead.
Donovan Newby led Milwaukee with a career-high 16 points, making 4-of-7 from deep. He added three rebounds, two steals, and a block.
Joey St. Pierre contributed his first double-double as a Panther, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds when he corralled the final missed shot of the afternoon. He also added a pair of blocks and a steal.
DeAndre Gholston was also in double-figures, finishing with 13. Gholston was also named to the Fort Myers Tip-Off All-Tournament team after leading MKE with 19 points against Bowling Green Tuesday.
Milwaukee was hitting from deep early, with Gholston connecting on a third straight attempt to make it 11-4 early.
Yale pushed back, using a 14-2 run to grab a 20-15 advantage, but Milwaukee was tied again at 20-all on a St. Pierre layup off a nice find by
Jasin Sinani.
Six in a row turned the tide to the Bulldogs and forced a timeout, but Gholston swished back-to-back 3's that had MKE ahead until the halftime horn, trailing 31-30 heading into the room on a Yale buzzer-beater.
The second half turned the Bulldogs way. Six in a row extended the led to double-figures for the first time at 51-38 and it never fell below that threshold the rest of the way.
Up next, the Panthers head back to Wisconsin for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to the court Nov. 28. Milwaukee hosts Alcorn State, set for a 1 p.m. tip-off Sunday.
