Quick Goal Holds Up As Panthers Retain Chancellor’s Cup, 1-0

Kelderman heads in the winner in the second minute

MILWAUKEE – Jake Kelderman scored just 91 seconds into the contest and the Milwaukee men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Green Bay Saturday evening at Engelmann Stadium.

"It's always a big emotional game against Green Bay, obviously, with the Chancellor's Cup on the line," head coach Kris Kelderman said. "It's always a tough match."

The Panthers (6-4-1, 4-1-1 Horizon League) got a five-save shutout from Nick Chiappa and held on to defeat the Phoenix (1-7-3, 0-4-1 Horizon League) and retain possession in the yearly battle for the "Chancellor's Cup".

"I thought we got off to a really good start in the game and we were pleased with how we went in at halftime," Kelderman said. "Give Green Bay credit, they picked up the pressure."

The only goal of the game came quickly. It started after a foul, with Logan Farrington taking the ensuing free kick. The first touch into the box came back out, with Quinn Rechner running the ball down and passing back to Farrington.

His next service found the head of Kelderman, and Jake did the rest, heading in his first goal of the fall at the 1:31 mark.

"For obvious reasons that was a big-time goal," said Kelderman, who took in the proud-dad moment.

An interesting first half ensued, with the two teams combining for 11 shots (MKE the 7-4 edge) over the first 45 minutes, yet Kelderman's goal the only attempt on target. Farrington almost had one of his own, rifling a shot on a nice combination of passes from Raul Medina and Gabe Anguil over the crossbar in the 32nd minute.

The second half was just the opposite, with the Phoenix coming out the aggressor while recording 11 of the 17 shots of the period – with nine of them combined finishing on frame.

"In my opinion, we had a bunch of unforced errors in the second half – we lost our sharpness, had some turnovers," Kelderman said. "And we had a couple of chances in the second half as well that if we could have gotten the second goal, we would have made the game easier on ourselves."

Chiappa was up to the task a handful of times, making a spectacular save in the 47th minute to keep it 1-0.

Quality chances did come from Adi Vaknin in the 56th minute – sprung in the box on a great pass from Farrington – and Anguil in the 59th minute, with a pair of impressive saves by Green Bay's Jamison Yoder denying a second goal each time.

For the game, the visitors eked out a 15-to-13 edge in shots, with both teams putting five attempts on goal. Corner kicks came out even at 4-to-4 as well, with the Phoenix finishing the match with 53 percent of total possession. Vaknin paced the MKE offense with four shots.

Up next, the Panthers will have just one match on the calendar next week, heading to Michigan to take on Detroit Mercy Saturday. Game time is set for 6 p.m. CST.
