INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Taylor Hattori scored a goal in the first half and assisted an insurance strike in the second to help the Milwaukee women's soccer team record a 2-0 victory over IUPUI Thursday evening at Carroll Stadium.
The Panthers (11-1, 6-0 Horizon League) overcame a sluggish start and tightened up the defense against the Jaguars (2-10-1, 1-5 Horizon League) after halftime to remain undefeated in conference play and record a sixth-straight victory on the season in the process.
"We started the game slowly, but as the game went on, we felt we were able to get control of the contest and score some good goals," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "At the end of the day, it always feels good to get three points on the road."
The offense took a bit to get going, with
Mackenzie Schill finally getting the first shot on goal almost 15 minutes in. And the 'Jags also gave MKE an early scare, picking up a turnover in back and firing one off the post just four minutes in.
Milwaukee took control after its first goal, which was started by a great individual effort by
Maggie Woods after picking up a loose ball and threading a pass through the defense. Hattori did the rest for her first goal of the season, finding the upper-90 of the far post at the 25:23 mark.
Hattori nearly had a brace in the first half, getting sprung on a nifty backheel pass from
Jelena Sever on the give-and-go, but the IUPUI keeper came up with a big stop in the 35
th minute after she broke free into the front of goal.
The offense kept up the pressure from there, nearly adding a second goal on consecutive corners.
Rachel Phillpotts sent both on target, seeing one get deflected away and one saved nicely in 37
th minute.
Shots were 10-to-6 at half and the MKE defense stepped up, allowing just four shot attempts after the break – with none resulting on target of the four after intermission.
Hattori then created the second tally, heading a goal kick back her team's way to spring
Lesley Kiesling. Kiesling charged into the box, laying the ball off for
Kat Van Booven to tap in her seventh goal of the fall at the 55:09 mark.
Elaina LaMacchia picked up her fourth solo shutout of the season in net, making three saves to pick up the victory.
The final tallies for stats in the match went as follows: MKE 22-to-10 in shots; MKE 12-to-3 in shots on goal; MKE 3-to-1 in corner kicks.
Mackenzie Schill paced the offense with five shots; four others recorded three apiece.
The Panthers return to Engelmann Stadium Sunday, hosting UIC at 1 p.m.
