Panthers Tripped Up By St. Thomas Despite Strong Effort

MKE dominates stat sheet but comes up short

MILWAUKEE – St. Thomas scored in the 34th minute and the Milwaukee men's soccer team was never able to find the equalizer despite dominating the match for the large majority of the evening, falling by a final score of 1-0 at Engelmann Stadium Tuesday night.

The Panthers (7-6-1) fell to the Tommies (2-11-2) despite putting up an advantage of 21-to-9 in shots while also maintaining 63 percent of possession in the match. In addition, Milwaukee had a 5-to-3 edge in corner kicks yet was unable to find a goal, putting a damper on "Senior Night".

The goal came against the run of play in the first half, with St. Thomas using a long serve to the far post to set up the winner. The ball sailed over the head of one Tommie forward, but Jacek Nickowski was able to corral it before it went out and sneak in his first goal of the season on a tough angle at the 33:50 mark.

Milwaukee had plenty of possession and chances all evening, with one of the closest coming in the 61st minute when Josh Kidder sent a blast off the left post and back into play. The team earned a corner kick immediately after, but Gabe Anguil's well-struck header was also turned away.

Gijs Van Schouten was credited with four saves on the night, most impressively a brilliant stop on an open breakaway chance that kept it a one-goal contest in the 56th minute. Paolo Gratton led the offense with five shots.

Gratton was one of four players honored in a pregame ceremony on "Senior Night", joined by Jake Kelderman, Andreas Soerensen, and Shawn Azcueta.

MKE is back in action Saturday, taking on second-place Oakland in a league contest with huge implications in the standings race as the regular season winds to a close. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. CST.
