MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee volleyball team had no trouble on Sunday afternoon, picking up its second straight sweep with a 3-0 win over Youngstown State.
"I'm proud of the team to simplify and be more efficient with blocking and that happened today," head coach
Susie Johnson said. "We are executing our serve at a high level and that is really important at this point of the season – to keep getting better and better."
After an early back-and-forth in the first,
Lauren Spaulding served up five straight points to put MKE (15-6, 9-0 Horizon League) in front 10-5. The Panthers poured it on from there and
Carmen Heilemann finished strong. The fifth-year senior put away two kills and added a block as MKE ended on a 6-0 run for a 25-9 win.
It was a similar story in the second set as the Panthers used a handful of runs to take control.
Abby Koenen and
Ari Miller combined for eight kills as Milwaukee doubled up the Penguins 24-12. YSU (4-16, 1-8 Horizon League) would score two more but a block from
Rylie Vaughn and Miller ended it 25-14 for a 2-0 lead.
MKE again took the early lead and never looked back in the third set. Malone shouldered the load with five kills as the Panthers hit .346 in a 25-12 win to earn the sweep.
Heilemann put together an impressive all-around finish with nine kills, eight digs, four blocks, and an ace.
Malone led the Panthers with 10 kills in addition to four blocks.
As a team, Milwaukee hit .357 with 38 kills. The Panthers totaled 45 digs led by Vaughn's 13. Vaughn added 26 assists for her 50th career double-double.
The Panthers remain home for two more contests this week including Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday, October 21 followed by IUPUI on Friday.
