DETROIT, Mich. – Mackenzie Schill scored a pair of goals to help lead the Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Detroit Mercy Thursday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Panthers (13-1, 8-0 Horizon League) led quickly, but the Titans (2-12-1, 1-6-1 Horizon League) stuck around all day, tying the contest at 1-1 and then 2-2 early in the second half before Schill's brace won it, extending the MKE winning streak in the series to 15 in a row.
Schill scored her second of the game – and 10
th of season – off a
Gaby Schwartz free kick at the 60:04 mark.
"Schill really has the ability to dominate a game," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "And today she was dangerous and scored a couple goals."
Noteworthy on the play: the assist for Schwartz gives her 17 for the season, breaking the single-season program mark of 16 set by Kate Megna in 2009.
"For the past couple of weeks, we have received good energy from players off of the bench in both games and in training," Fabiano said. "Today was no different."
The Milwaukee bench saw five players see 29-plus minutes of time on the field, including 66 from
Haley Steel, 60 from
Maggie Woods, and 56 from
Lainey Higgins.
Up 2-1 at the break, Detroit Mercy quickly made it a new game for the second time, knotting the scoreline at 2-2 at the 47:38 mark.
Schill then found the back of the net in the 61
st minute for her third game-winner of the fall. The Panthers looked to tack on, but the Titans were up to the task. From that point Higgins forced a pair of saves,
Jelena Sever had a near-goal saved late by a defender, and Woods also had a quality chance stopped in the 89
th minute.
MKE got off to another strong start, with Schill opening the scoring at the 3:23 mark. She sent a first shot attempt off the crossbar, before getting set up for the immediate response by
Lesley Kiesling to make it 1-0.
Detroit leveled the match in the 25
th minute, but Milwaukee had a quick answer. Helped by a handball in the box by a UDM defender, Schwartz converted a PK just 1:58 later to go back ahead, 2-1, at the 26:22 mark.
For the game, Milwaukee posted advantages of 19-to-9 in shots, 12-to-6 in shots on goal, and 6-to-2 in corner kicks. Schill topped the offense with five shots, becoming the first MKE player with 10-plus goals since Anna Smalley had 11 in 2016. In net,
Elaina LaMacchia picked up the win, making four saves.
The team returns to campus for a big game Sunday, playing host to Northern Kentucky at Engelmann Stadium. The Norse are 6-1 (and play Oakland tonight) and close behind the Panthers in the league standings. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
