MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Milwaukee women's basketball team couldn't keep up with IUPUI on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 75-52 decision at the Klotsche Center. The Panthers won the rebounding battle against one of the best rebounding teams in the Horizon League but shot just 23.1 percent from beyond the arc in the loss.
"They [IUPUI] are incredibly talented and move the basketball with a purpose. Their unselfish played really showed," head coach
Kyle Rechlicz commented. "We have a lot of growing still to do as a team."
IUPUI (13-6, 7-1 Horizon League) entered the game as one of the best shooting teams in the Horizon League and proved it at the Klotsche Center on Sunday, hitting 50.9 percent of its shots from the floor and 52.4 percent from long range.
The Panthers (6-12, 3-4 Horizon League) pulled in 31 rebounds compared to 30 for IUPUI led by
Brandi Bisping, who grabbed nine boards.
Sydney Staver reached double digits for Milwaukee, scoring 10 points on 3-for-6 shooting.
Sydney Levy got going early for the Panthers with a pair of three-pointers in the first five minutes, but the Panthers had a hard time getting anything else to fall, shooting just 26.7 percent in the first quarter. Meanwhile, IUPUI shot 53.8 percent from the floor to open an 18-12 advantage after one.
In the second,
Emma Wittmershaus scored seven points as MKE shot 50 percent from the floor, but IUPUI had an answer for everything, converting 53.8 percent of its shots.
The Jaguars got some open looks and knocked them down, hitting four of six three-pointers in the second quarter alone.
After the break, the Panthers locked down on defense to start, holding IUPUI to just one field goal in its first eight attempts, but couldn't cut into the deficit, going 0-for-7 from the floor. The Jaguars connected on seven of their next eight shots to pull away 60-32 through three quarters.
Milwaukee pushed in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 20-15 and shooting 57.1 percent, but the deficit was too much for the Panthers to overcome.
Bisping added eight points and three steals to go with her team-leading nine rebounds.
Levy finished 2-for-4 from long range for nine points and added a pair of rebounds.
Next up, the Panthers hit the road for four straight Horizon League games beginning with Cleveland State on Friday, January 24. Live coverage links for all games can be found on
