Panthers Suffer 6-1 Loss to Northwestern

MEQUON, Wis. – The Milwaukee baseball team outhit Big Ten opponent Northwestern, but the Panthers struggled on the mound falling by a score of 6-1 Tuesday night from Kapco Park.

The Milwaukee Panthers (16-13) stayed within striking distance throughout most of the game, but Northwestern (15-14) took advantage of Milwaukee's pitching struggles to stay in command of the game. In the innings that the Wildcats scored, Northwestern drew at least one walk and combined for nine total walks in the game.

"We knew going into the game it was going to be hard to score with the weather conditions, so we knew whatever team played defense and threw strikes was going to win the game," said head coach Scott Doffek. "We outhit them, but we didn't throw strikes and beat ourselves on the mound."

Milwaukee's starter Jack Mahoney (1-1) walked the first two batters to start the game and nearly worked out of it when he got Northwestern's three and four hitters to foul out, but right fielder Casey O'Laughlin came up clutch with the two out, two RBI single up the middle for a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Panthers looked to get even when Zach Nogalski led off with a hit by pitch and eventually advanced to third after a Devin Rybacki single. Both runners were stranded however, after NU's Parker Hanks got the next batter to pop out for the final out of the inning.

Down 3-0 after six, the Wildcats extended its lead to six runs after a two walk, two hit, three run inning.

The Panthers finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the ninth when Trevor Schwecke led off with an infield single, and was hit in when Colin Kreiter ripped a double down the right field line for his 22nd RBI of the season. Northwestern put any hopes of a comeback to rest after sitting down the next two Panther batters in order leaving Kretier at second.

NU's Jack Dunn led the Wildcats offensively going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

Milwaukee scattered six hits throughout the game with Trevor Schwecke going 2-for-3 and a walk to lead the way.

Wednesday's game has been canceled due to the projected forecast, so the Panthers will have to wait until the three-game series against Youngstown State to rebound from tonight's loss. First game against YSU is set for 1 p.m. at Henry Arron Field, Friday, April 9.
