WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Milwaukee baseball team made its first-ever matchup with Purdue a good one, claiming a 6-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Alexander Field.
The Panthers (7-6) got a strong pitching effort against the Boilermakers (3-11), with seven pitchers combining to allow just one run on six hits. The victory snapped Purdue's home winning streak at 13 games, which had come into the contest as the second longest in the nation.
"We got another quality start out of Nick (Winter) today and our bullpen was clean the last few innings," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We did just enough with the bats and took advantage of a couple of their miscues to come out ahead. This was one of those days where it was just a good team win."
Milwaukee got three RBI's from
Trevor Schwecke and a key two-run single to provide some insurance runs from
Zach Nogalski to lead the way.
Nick Winter got the start, responding by working into the fifth inning without allowing a run while giving up just two hits. He retired seven in a row before a leadoff walk in the fifth wrapped up his outing.
Alex McIntosh (2-0) picked up the victory with a scoreless inning and
George Swedie picked up two key outs to close out the bottom of the sixth inning when the Boilermakers had two on with just one out.
Matt Vanek and
Patrick Tomfohrde followed with scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth and
Jake Sommers struck out a pair in the ninth to close it out.
Mike Ferri broke out with a 3-for-4 day, scoring a pair of runs. Nogalski added two hits and a run scored to his 2-RBI day and
Devin Rybacki scored twice to up his league-leading run total to 16.
Schwecke got MKE on the board with a sac fly in the fourth and, after plating a run with the help of an error, made it 4-0 in the next inning with a sharp single to left that chased two more runs home.
Purdue would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, but Nogalski turned the tide quickly, sending a 3-2 pitch up the middle to plate two after the bases were loaded with no outs on an error, single by Ferri and hit-by-pitch to
Oakland Scanlan.
Horizon League play opens next, with the Panthers heading to Ohio to take on preseason No. 1 Wright State. First game of the three-game set will get underway Friday at 2 p.m. CST.
