MILWAUKEE, Wis. –
Lizzie Odegard recorded her second double-double of the year, but it was not enough as the Milwaukee women's basketball team fell 63-51 to Bowling Green on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers held a 40-38 rebounding advantage but couldn't get the shots to fall, hitting just 31.3 percent from the floor in the loss.
Milwaukee (3-7) kept the game close the entire way but each time the Panthers tied it up, Bowling Green responded with a run to open the gap.
In the early going, Bowling Green (6-3) knocked down three of its first four shots for the lead but
Bre Cera and
Sydney Levy responded on consecutive possessions to even it up 7-7. A Falcons' jumper at 2:18 sparked a 6-0 run before
Tadri Heard connected on a three-pointer on Panthers' final possession of the first to cut the deficit to three.
Defense was the story for both teams in the second as neither team shot better than 25 percent from the floor. Milwaukee took the quarter 11-10 and clawed to within three at the half.
The Panthers held a 12-8 advantage in the first half and despite shooting just 29 percent from the floor, it was still a one possession game.
Odegard knocked down a game-tying triple on the opening possession of the second half but Milwaukee missed its next four shots over three minutes as the Falcons gained a 34-28 lead.
The Panthers again found an equalizer after
Jamie Reit hit a jumper and followed with a pair of free throws but two Odegard baskets and a layup from Alyssa Fisher was the only offense the final five minutes and BGSU took a 49-41 lead into the fourth.
The Falcons' lead reached double digits at 8:34 and against at 7:32 before Odegard and Levy sparked one more Panthers' run, combining for six straight points to cut it to five with 3:12 to play.
The comeback was quickly spoiled, however, as Bowling Green scored seven straight and Milwaukee turned in five consecutive empty possessions to put the Panthers in a 61-49 hole.
With 14 points and 10 rebounds, Odegard recorded the third double-double of her career. The senior also dished out a pair of assists.
Levy reached double digits for the third straight game, scoring 11 points on 3-for-9 shooting from long range. Levy added a career-high six rebounds against Bowling Green.
As a team, Milwaukee shot under 40 percent for the fifth straight game. The Panthers pulled in 14 offensive rebounds but had just six second chance points to show.
McKaela Schmelzer and
Brandi Bisping each recorded three assists toward Milwaukee's 14 compared to just 12 turnovers, second lowest mark this year.
After a midweek break, the Panthers will be back at the Klotsche Center on Saturday, December 21 for a 2:00 pm tipoff against North Dakota. Tickets and live coverage links can be found on
