MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee volleyball team pushed its winning streak to 14 matches on Saturday after dismantling Youngstown State 3-0 on the road. The Panthers (17-1, 4-0 Horizon League) held the Penguins (6-11, 0-4 Horizon League) under 15 points in each set and dominated the stat sheet in the win.
"After a long, tough match last night, it was great to travel here today and come out with an exclamation point," head coach
Susie Johnson commented. "It was really exciting for me as a coach to see the maturity in this team that they can be so efficient and intentional."
Milwaukee's 14-match winning streak matches the program's longest since 2007 and is tied for the longest in the NCAA this season.
It was a quick turnaround for Milwaukee after a hard-fought five-set win over Cleveland State on Friday evening but the Panthers no signs of fatigue. The efficiency of Milwaukee's offense showed immediately as MKE put away 15 kills with just two errors, hitting .351 in set.
After trading points back and forth, two kills from
Louise Kiekhofer and slams from
Kleja Cerniauskaite and
Jenna Miller pushed Milwaukee ahead 19-11 with a 5-1 run. A bit later, two Penguins errors paired with two
Carmen Heilemann kills had the Panthers up 1-0 with a 25-14 win.
The visiting Panthers showed no signs of slowing down in the second, running out to a 6-1 lead behind four kills from three different players. The defense of Milwaukee was suffocating, holding Youngstown State to just eight kills with eight errors in the frame. The Panthers recorded 22 digs and three blocks in the second set and continued to pile it on, jumping out to a 16-6 advantage.
The Penguins scored three points late, but Heilemann put away her fourth kill of the set and a block from
Ari Miller and Cerniauskaite put Milwaukee on top 2-0.
Youngstown State put up a fight early on in the third set, but down 7-5, Milwaukee rattled off a 5-0 run with four kills from different players to go up three.
Up 15-10 following a media timeout,
Kylie Wilks served six straight points to put the match out of reach for the Penguins. A. Miller put away three of her six third-set kills in the run as Milwaukee pulled ahead 21-10.
Three straight points then had the Panthers smelling a sweep and after a miscue, J. Miller cashed in her second straight kill for a 25-12 victory.
Johnson continued, "It was a very definitive win. We were really efficient offensively and all of our hitters were effective. We doubled up their kills and dominated defensively as well which was great."
Milwaukee hit .310 for the match, its sixth time hitting at least .300 this season. A. Miller put away 12 kills in 18 swings, hitting .611 for the Panthers.
Rylie Vaughn had a match to remember as she recorded 20 assists and 20 digs, to join an elusive group in the Milwaukee record books. The sophomore recorded the first 20-20 match since Jenna Berg in 2009.
Wilks and
Jess Grabowski joined in double digit digs with 11 and 19, respectively as Milwaukee recorded 76 digs as a team, the most in a three-set match this year.
The Panthers held the Penguins to a .073 attack percentage, the third time this season Milwaukee has held a team under .100.
MKE will now return to the Klotsche Center for a 6:00 pm Horizon League contest on Friday, October 11. Tickets for the match, along with live coverage links, can be found on
