DAYTON, Ohio – Following a scoreless first half in which it dominated, the Milwaukee women's soccer team erupted offensively in a big second half to claim a 3-0 victory over Wright State Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Panthers (12-1, 5-0 Horizon League) broke through against the Raiders (8-3-2, 3-2 Horizon League) in the 55
th minute, opening up the floodgates in extending their winning streak to nine games in a row in a battle between the top two teams in the Horizon League standings coming in to play today.
Rachel Phillpotts netted the eventual game-winner on a corner kick, with
Gaby Schwartz recording her league-best eighth assist on Phillpotts' third goal of the campaign.
"Very pleased with today's performance," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "The last couple of weekends, we have put two quality games together on the road against two good teams. I thought our work rate was high. Defensively, we were disciplined and in the attack, our patience paid off."
From there it was the
Julia Barajas show, finding the back of the net twice in a game for the first time in her collegiate career. Actually making her first appearance in game-action since Sept. 20, she found her first goal in the 59
th minute to make it 2-0, finishing a pass from the sideline from
McKenna Stratton, helped along by a slight deflection off the back line.
Her second one was pretty, chipping the keeper right in front of the goal off a combination of passes from
Mackenzie Schill from the endline to
Brooke Parnello in the box at the 79:32 mark to make it 3-0 and close out the scoring.
Elaina LaMacchia posted her fifth shutout of the season and 13
th of her career. She recorded a pair of saves, with her best coming in the closing seconds when she snagged a free kick headed for the far post in the 90
th minute.
The 90 minutes of clean soccer extends her scoreless streak to 629:48, now the fourth longest shutout streak in program history.
Milwaukee carried possession in the first half and posted a 7-to-1 advantage in shots. They came close at least three times: Stratton slid one just wide of the far post after beating the goalkeeper in the ninth minute;
Maggy Henschler's header off a corner kick went inches over the bar in the 21
st minute and
Taylor Hattori sent one just wide from the left wing in the 44
th minute.
On the day, MKE posted advantages of 13-to-4 in shots, 6-to-2 in shots on goal and 3-to-1 in corner kicks. Barajas led the way with three shots; all on goal.
Up next, the Panthers return home for one game next week, welcoming Northern Kentucky to Engelmann Stadium Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. against the Norse.
