GREEN BAY, Wis. – Despite a heavy advantage in shots and possession, the Milwaukee men's soccer team was unable to find the back of the net in falling to Green Bay, 2-0, Saturday night at Aldo Santaga Stadium.
The Panthers (5-6-1, 1-3-1 Horizon League) had over twice as many shots as the Phoenix (3-6-2, 2-3 Horizon League), and had all six of the corner kicks in the contest, yet suffered another tough-luck loss on the road in the yearly battle for the "Chancellor's Cup".
MKE made it interesting in the end. Down 1-0 since the 54
th minute, the offense continued to find opportunities, but were just not able to get them on goal.
As time ticked away in regulation there was plenty of action, starting with a saved attempt from
Suad Suljic in the 85
th minute.
It was Suljic again, getting open on the right wing in the 86
th minute, seeing his on-target attempted get blocked by the final defender.
Vuk Latinovich nearly played hero as well, sending a left-footed shot whistling just wide of the left post on a pass from Suljic at the 88:20 mark.
Milwaukee would earn a free kick just outside the top of the 18 with one minute left. Latinovich's shot was blocked out of bounds, with a header off the proceeding corner kick also flying just wide.
Green Bay made matters worse, scoring off a counter attack in the closing seconds to make the final scoreline very misleading.
The Panthers were around the net all day, finishing with a 17-to-7 shot advantage after all was said and done. However, just two of them went on the scoresheet as on-goal attempts, making the day much easier for the Phoenix defense.
Evan Conway came close to a trio of goals, settling for a game-high six shot attempts on the day. Latinovich added five.
Freddy Lorenzen posted three saves in defeat.
Up next, it is an interesting week for the Panthers, playing a pair of non-conference games as the schedule hits mid-October. Up first is a road game at Eastern Illinois Tuesday, Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
