New Hampshire Spoils Panther’s Opener

Team plays South Dakota at 7:30 later tonight

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball team started strong but couldn't overcome New Hampshire's experience down the stretch in a 3-1 loss Friday in the first match of the season.

MKE – which features five freshmen and eight newcomers – started strong with a 25-22 win in the opening set, but couldn't quite hang on, falling 25-12, 25-22 and 25-18 in the final three frames.

"It was very good to get to see our team out on the court and getting experience," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We're a very inexperienced team and it was a very different lineup than we've had in the past. Truthfully, I think there will be some growing pains and there will be a lot of learning with this team, but I'm confident we'll get there."

Kylie Wilks led Milwaukee with nine kills, while sophomore Jenna Miller and newcomer Shanon Volpis each chipped in with seven.

Freshman Jess Grabowski had a team-high 12 digs, while classmate Lauren Spaulding added another 10. Freshman Rylie Vaughn tallied a double-double in her first collegiate match with 17 assists and 10 digs.

Gabri Olhava led the way for New Hampshire with 18 kills on just 32 attempts.

The young Panthers return to the court again Friday, hosting South Dakota at 7:30 pm from the Klotsche Center.
