Former Panther Coaches Coyotes To Win

Milwaukee closes out home tournament Saturday at 3 pm

MILWAUKEE – After four standout years playing for the Black & Gold, former Panther standout and current South Dakota head coach Leanne Williamson (nee Felsing) got to showcase her talented squad in front of the Milwaukee crowd with a 3-0 win Friday evening from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers never quite got on track, going up against a talented South Dakota squad that has once again been picked to battle for the Summit League crown this season.

Starting five freshmen and playing a large contingent of newcomers, MKE battled the whole way but never quite got on track in the loss, 25-15, 25-14, 25-16.

"This was a tough match," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "It was an alum coaching against us today and she's a great coach and she was a great player here. Congrats to them. They showed their experience and came to play. We showed a lot of our youth and really it's just a matter of growth and learning. We have to improve our first contact in our serving and our passing to be able to execute what we want to do at the net."

A pair of freshmen led the way defensively for the Black & Gold, as Jess Grabowski and Lauren Spaulding each had 15 digs on the nightcap.

At the net, sophomore Makenzie Mroczenski and freshmen Kleja Cerniauskaite and Abby Koenen each tallied a pair of blocks in just the second match of the year.

Offensively, junior college transfer Shari Volpis led the way with eight kills in the three-setter.

Madison Jurgens orchestrated a solid attack for the Coyotes, leading the way with 32 assists on the night.

The Panthers close out their three-game home tournament Saturday with a 3 pm contest against Big Ten power Northwester.
