MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Devin Rybacki's bat and
Austin Schulfer's arm highlighted the Milwaukee baseball's 9-3 win over Northern Kentucky Friday evening at Henry Aaron Field.
The Panthers (18-12, 10-9) scored nine runs in just three innings, but a big five run fourth inning gave Milwaukee a comfortable cushion over the visiting Norse (12-31, 7-15) who we held to three runs on eight hits.
Senior
Austin Schulfer (5-5) picked up his fifth win of the season pitching seven innings and allowed six hits and struck out five.
Panthers'
Tyler Bordner started things off in the second inning with an RBI triple to left center, his first of the season.
Oakland Scanlan followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Bordner for his 21
st RBI, giving Milwaukee an early 2-0 lead.
In the fourth, with two outs and two Panther runners at first and second, hot hitting
Devin Rybacki went yard for his first homerun of the season. NKU's pitcher Cameron Ross made an early exit in the third after
Trevor Schwecke singled and hit
Colin Kreiter. In the first pitch of his at-bat,
Ben Chally collected his 23
rd and 24
th RBI with a single to left field, extending the Panthers' lead 7-0.
Austin Schulfer took care of business through seven innings and didn't allow a Norse runner to advance past second base. It wasn't until the eighth inning when Northern Kentucky finally got on the scoreboard and took advantage of two Panther miscues.
"Austin didn't have his best stuff today, but he did what he does and gave us a great opportunity to win a game," said Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek. "We're still trying to put together a complete game, and in the eighth we let a couple plays get away from us, but we were fortunate to get away with it with a big cushion. We need to find a way to play all three phases of the game well and not give a team extra outs."
Three runs on two hits and two Panther errors were tallied for Northern Kentucky, but not before Milwaukee scored two runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach.
Both
Ben Chally and Trevor Swecke had a multi-hit game with Chally going 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Schwecke collecting two hits and swiped his 14
th base of the season.
Game two of the series against the Norse will be held on Sat., May 5 at Henry Aaron Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
