Bats Come Alive in 14-4 Victory Over NKU

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Matt Quartel and the Milwaukee baseball team pounded out 14 runs on 18 hits winning the final game and the series over Northern Kentucky 14-4 Sunday from the Bill Aker Baseball Complex.

The Panthers (10-17, 6-6) had four players who had a multi-hit day with Matt Quartel leading the way. Quartel hit just shy of the cycle going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and 3 RBI's. Meanwhile, Northern Kentucky (7-20, 4-8) had 12 hits on the day, but left 11 on base as the Panther pitching staff shutdown the Norse when needed limiting the damage.

"We did a nice job today in the box by stacking quality at-bats, and (Matt) Quartel was great all weekend and came up big in today's game," Milwaukee head coach Scott Doffek said. "(Jared) Reklaitis  gave us a chance today, minimized the damage by giving up some hits, but (George) Swedie, (Clayton) Usleman and (Patrick) Tomfohrde did a really nice job out of the bullpen.

Tied at two after two innings, Milwaukee plated two more runs in the fourth for the go-ahead. The inning began with Matt Quartel recording his second double of the game advancing Ben Chally to third for the early threat. Oakland Scanlan scored Chally with a sacrifice fly to left field, and Quartel eventually scored off of a Norse throwing error.

Northern Kentucky would score a run in the fifth inning, but by the seventh inning, the Panthers never looked back. Milwaukee combined for over half of its hits in the final three frames, and put up crooked numbers in the run column to put the game out of reach.

In the seventh inning, Quartel ripped a triple down the left line knocking in Trevor Schwecke and Ben Chally. Catcher Tyler Bordner helped the cause with an infield single scoring Quartel for a four run, four hit inning.

The final two innings of the game were near identical as the seventh for the Panthers scoring three runs each on six hits.

Jared Reklaitis went five innings while allowing three runs and two earned to improve to 3-2 on the season. George Swedie, Clayton Uselman, Patrick Tomfohrde and Brandon Parr combined for just two hits and one run in the final four innings.

MKE will jump back on the road as early as Tues., April 10 with a single game at Chicago State followed by a game at Valparaiso the next day.
