Strong Pitching Leads to Doubleheader Sweep Over Penguins

YOUNGTOWN, Ohio – Milwaukee baseball's Austin Schulfer and Jake Sommers pitched lights out in the doubleheader sweep over Youngstown State winning 5-0 and 6-1 Saturday from Eastwood Field in Ohio.

As the designated home team, Milwaukee (14-18, 8-6) got strong performances from the mound in addition to some timely hitting while allowing Youngstown State (10-25, 7-9) to a combined eight hits and one run on the day.

In game one, Schulfer (4-4) picked up right where he left off after his record breaking strikeout performance against Northern Kentucky. This time, Schulfer limited the Penguins to just two hits while striking out nine for the complete game shutout.

"(Austin) Schulfer was just really good again today," said head coach Scott Doffek." "He had a good mix and we played good defense."

The Panthers managed single runs in both the first and third innings to get ahead the Penguins 2-0. Ben Chally knocked in Trevor Schwecke for an RBI single to right center in the first, and Mitch Buban scored but not before hitting a double in the third.

The greatest threat came in the seventh inning when Youngstown State put the first two runners on base. A sac bunt advanced the runners, but Schulfer was able to get the next two batters out and maintain a two run lead.

Milwaukee put up a three spot on the Penguins in the eighth inning to extend their lead to five runs while Schulfer had a quick three-up-three-down to end the game.

The strong efforts in pitching didn't stop after game one for the Panthers. Jake Sommers (3-6) racked up eight Penguin strikeouts and scattered three hits in seven innings of work in game two.

"(Jake) Sommers was really good for us today as well," said Doffek. "He had a three-pitch mix and did a great job of keeping them off balance."

Both teams were held scoreless until the fourth inning. Milwaukee put together a big four run, four hit, fourth to take the lead.

"(Collin) Floyd was equally as good," said Doffek. "We were fortunate in the fourth to string a couple, and then Ty (Tyler Bordner) hit the big two out home run."

The first two runs of the inning came by way of a Schwecke single to left field scoring Devin Rybacki and Mike Ferri. After a line drive double play, the Panthers were almost held to just the two, but after a Matt Quartel single, Tyler Bordner hit his fourth homerun of the season to put Milwaukee up 4-0.

Youngstown State finally got on the scoreboard in the ninth inning, but not before the Panthers knocked in two more runs in the eighth to complete the doubleheader sweep.

Milwaukee and Youngstown State will complete the series Sun., April 22. First pitch from Eastwood Field is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
