SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Keith Torres sent Sacramento State to an unlikely 3-2 walkoff victory over the Milwaukee baseball team in the 10
th inning on a bases-loaded suicide squeeze Sunday night at John Smith Field.
Â
The Panthers (2-8) were unable to close out late leads of 1-0 and 2-1 against the Hornets (5-6), falling in extra innings.
Â
Milwaukee broke through in a scoreless pitcher's duel in the eighth inning, taking a 1-0 lead on three consecutive two-out base hits. With the bases empty,
Mitch Buban and
Mike Ferri singled and
Trevor Schwecke came through with a double to make it 1-0.
Â
After limiting the Hornets to just two hits over the first eight frames, the home team found a way to record two more in the last of the ninth, tying the game on a two-out jam-shot into the outfield.
Â
No worries for the Panthers, who went right back into the lead in their half of the 10
th, scoring on a two-out single off the bat of
Colin Kreiter to forge ahead, 2-1.
Â
The team was unable to hold, as a wild pitch plated the tying run after a pair of base hits and Torres' bunt found a hole despite Milwaukee bringing in a fifth player into the infield defense.
Â
UWM tiptoed with danger all night on the mound.
Jared Reklaitis started and worked around six walks in striking out a career-best eight in his 5.0 scoreless innings. He allowed a leadoff triple in the fourth but followed that with three K's in a row. The bases were also walked loaded in the fifth with one out but again, no problem for Reklaitis, who struck out the next batter looking and got a fly ball to end it.
Â
The offense contributed nine hits in the game, led by 2-for-4 efforts from
Oakland Scanlan and
Jack Thelen, who was making his first collegiate start.
Â
In the opener, the Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Gonzaga on a home run by
Ben Chally in the top of the second inning.
Â
However, it ended up with just one frame doing all of the damage, as the Bulldogs put up a four-spot on the strength of five hits in the third and that was all that was needed.
Â
That spoiled a decent start by
Jake Sommers (1-2), who took the loss after working into the seventh. He walked one and struck out a pair, allowing nine hits.
Â
"I was really happy with how Jake threw the ball," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "He worked ahead and got ground balls, but we were a little unfortunate with a couple of them finding some holes in the third. Offensively, we had a hard time stringing anything together. In general, we played a clean game; we just need to get these bats going a little."
Â
Mike Ferri had a hit, as did Scanlan and
Devin Rybacki.
Matt Quartel went 2-for-3, ripping a double.
Â
Up next, the Panthers will make a midweek stop in Minnesota to play the Gophers Wednesday (6 p.m. first pitch) before heading to Alabama to take on UAB in a three-game weekend set.
