Defense Powers Panthers Past North Dakota

Milwaukee cruises to big road win

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The Milwaukee women's basketball team used an 11-0 run late and never looked back in a 64-46 win over North Dakota Friday morning in front of 2,607 fans at "Elementary School Day" from the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.

Tied at 19 with 3:39 left in the first half, MKE (4-5) hit back-to-back-to-back threes and let their defense take over from there, holding North Dakota (2-6) to just .235 percent (12-51) in another dominating defensive performance.

"This is a really quality team that we just played," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "They've been on the road for seven games; this was their first home game…and they have one of the tougher non-conference schedules in the country. Their record really doesn't reflect how good they are, so this was a really good program win for us, to be able to come on the road and fight like this defensively."

Megan Walstad led all players with 15 points on 6-8 shooting to go with seven rebounds and one block.

Jamie Reit came off the bench for the first time all season and finished with 12 points, six rebounds, a career-high four steals and three assists.

Brandi Bisping, Lizzie Odegard and Ryaen Johnson all finished with six points and three rebounds, while McKaela Schmelzer tallied six assists, five rebounds and four points.

Lexi Klabo – who came into the game ranked 13th in the nation averaging 22.1 points/game – was held to just 1-6 shooting and just 14 points against Milwaukee's defense.

After a low-scoring first quarter, the two teams were knotted up at 19 with 3:39 left in the second quarter. Alyssa Fischer started the Panthers big run with a three – MKE's first of the game at that point. Lizzie Odegard then got in on the action with back-to-back three's on the next two possessions to put Milwaukee ahead 28-19 with 1:25 left. Schmelzer hit a pair of free throws to close out the half to make it 30-19 and MKE would never look back.

The Panthers got three's from Walstad and Reit on their first two possessions of the second half – finishing the game 8-19 from behind the arc.

North Dakota was able to pull back within 36-28 with 7:23 left in the third quarter, but the Panthers instantly responded. Reit got a steal, got to the line and hit two free throws to push the lead back to 10 before a fastbreak drive to the bucket by Schmelzer. Bisping then was left open in the corner and drained another triple and just like that MKE went back ahead 43-28 with 5:52 on the clock.

Another three by Walstad early in the fourth made it a 17-point Panther lead and Bisping's late lay in closed out the scoring to give Milwaukee an 18-point road win.

The Panthers shot 46.5 percent (20-43) overall and held the Fighting Hawks to just 23.5 percent (12-51) – the second-straight game MKE has held its opponent to 25 percent or less shooting.

Milwaukee claimed the battle on the boards, 38-30, had 31 points off the bench and 18 points in the paint.

Up next, the Panthers will make the short drive to Fargo, N.D. to take on North Dakota State Sunday afternoon from the Scheels Center.
