Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 22/17 Marquette Outlasts Milwaukee

Levy nets career-high 19 points in loss

MILWAUKEE – Freshman guard Sydney Levy netted a career and game-high 19 points to help the Milwaukee women's basketball team on a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt before running out of time in an 83-74 loss to No. 22/17 Marquette Wednesday night from the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers (2-5) closed the gap all the way down to seven late in the fourth before their comeback effort ran out of time against their crosstown rivals.

The 74 points by Milwaukee are the most against Marquette (5-1) on the season, surpassing the previous high of 63.

"I knew this would be a competitive game; anytime you play your crosstown rivals it is, and Marquette has put together such a solid team," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I'm just impressed with our team. Our motto this year is no quit and play with all your heart, and we sure showed that in the fourth quarter."

Down by as many as 22 early in the third quarter, Milwaukee indeed never quit.

Levy scored eight of her 19 points in a two-minute span to close the gap to 52-38 with 4:11 left in the third.

Ryaen Johnson started the fourth quarter with a pair of free throws before a triple from McKaela Schmelzer made it 65-50 with 8:58 left to play.

Levy sank her fifth three of the game and suddenly it was a 12-point game with over seven minutes left on the clock.

The Panthers continued to battle. Bre Cera had a fast-break layup followed by another Panther three pointer to make it 69-58 at the 5:02 mark.

Akaylah Hayes went 1-2 from the free-throw line and then stole the ball for an easy lay in to close it to just a seven point contest late, but Marquette was able to do just enough down the stretch in the high-energy contest.

Levy led Milwaukee with 19 points on 7-11 shooting, including going 5-8 from behind the arc. She also finished with a career-high four rebounds.

Cera and Megan Walstad each finished with 11 points, combining for 12 boards and five assists.

Schmelzer had a solid shooting performance, going 3-4 from three to finish with a season-high nine points.

Seniors Akaylah Hayes and Ryaen Johnson each had solid nights with seven points and six rebounds apiece.

The Panthers outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 39-34, and finished the night shooting a season-best 48.1-percent from the floor, spurred on by a 9-14 (64.3) performance in that fourth quarter.

Up next, MKE welcomes Purdue Fort Wayne to the Klotsche Center for a 2 pm tip Saturday.
