Iron Unkind In Road Loss For Milwaukee

Panthers continue California trip Friday at Saint Mary’s

FRESNO, Calif. – Reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Week Megan Walstad finished with a team-high 13 points and eight rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee women's basketball team fell, 65-48, Tuesday night at Fresno State from the Save Mart Center.

The Panthers (1-3) took a 32-29 lead with 6:26 left in the third, but then saw Fresno State (2-1) go on a 21-1 run that spanned nearly eight minutes of action as the ball just wouldn't fall for MKE in the loss.

Walstad netted nine of her team-high 13 points in the second half, adding eight rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal.

Jamie Reit finished with eight points, Akaylah Hayes another seven and Sydney Levy chipped in with six.

Bree Delaney led the Bulldogs with 15 points, connecting on three of Fresno State's 10 three pointers on the night.

In a game that saw a number of big runs both ways, Fresno State created the first separation of the night late in the first with two late first-quarter buckets to lead 17-12 after one.

The home squad stretched that lead to 27-14 with 3:03 left to play in the half, only to see Milwaukee bounce back for a big run of their own. Reit started the run with a triple from the top of the key, followed by five-straight from Hayes. Walstad then used some impressive footwork down low for two to make it a three-point game at the break at 27-24.

Six early points in the third from Walstad to go with a bucket from Bre Cera and MKE led 32-29 with 6:26 left in the third. But the Panthers went ice cold from there, as the Bulldogs were able to get the home crowd behind them to the tune of a 21-1 run for a 50-33 lead with 8:04 left to play.

The Panthers were finally able to take the lid off the rim, getting a three from Lizzie Odegard and a pair from Levy in the fourth, but it wasn't enough in the road loss.

MKE continues its West Coast trip this weekend, starting Friday at Saint Mary's with a 4 pm Central tip from McKeon Pavilion.
