Roy And Warren-Newsome Lead Comeback OT Victory

Panthers top Blackbirds, 92-87

MILWAUKEE - Darius Roy scored 27 points and Carson Warren-Newsome added 21 to lead the Milwaukee men's basketball team to a come-from-behind, 92-87 victory in overtime against LIU Brooklyn Tuesday night at UWM Panther Arena.

"This was a great program win for us," head coach Pat Baldwin said. "We had a lot of guys contribute and step up. The one thing that we talk about with our guys is to just continue fighting and playing for each other, which we did tonight."

The Panthers (1-4) trailed the Blackbirds (3-2) – a team that made the NCAA Tournament a year ago – by eight points with just over four minutes remaining and by five with 1:19 on the clock, with Warren-Newsome sending the contest to overtime with a circus layup following a steal with just 13.8 seconds left.

"It was a great win for us tonight," head coach Pat Baldwin said. "Through a lot of adversity, throughout the game, for us to be down on multiple occasions – our guys showed a lot of fight and resiliency to come back and pick up this win."

Milwaukee took its first lead since halfway through the first on a pair of free throws by Warren-Newsome midway through the extra period and then went ahead for good on Roy's layup with 1:24 remaining.

Roy's career-high included an 11-for-12 showing at the free throw line, chipping in four rebounds and three assists, while also shooting an efficient 7-of-11 from the floor.

Warren-Newsome set a career-high for the second straight game, coming off the bench to pour in his 21 on 5-of-8 shooting which also included an 11-of-12 effort from the charity stripe. Warren-Newsome added five boards and three assists, and made the play of the game to send the night to extra time.

"Carson, for him to come off the bench following what he did in Cincinnati, with 21 points was really big for us and got to the free throw line," Baldwin said. "Darius was really, really big in the game. He took us to another level and again, he got to the free throw line."

Down 76-74 and without the ball, Warren-Newsome stole a pass near midcourt, had it poked away driving to the rim, regained it, and then finished with a layup that nearly rimmed out twice before falling through the net to make it 76-all.

Milwaukee put in a tremendous effort from the free throw line. Overall, the team went 33-of-41, marking the most makes since 34 against Texas State in November of 2009 and the most attempts since the same number against Green Bay in February of 2011.

Vance Johnson added an important nine points and nine rebounds, with Wil Sessoms just missing a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 9 rebounds.

Jashaun Agosto led the Blackbirds with 25 points, playing the entire 45 minutes.

After trading punches early, LIU Brooklyn eventually took the lead around the midway point of the first half and kept building, extending it to as many as 10 at 28-18 with five minutes remaining in the first. MKE had it down to six on a pair of occasions, but eventually settled for a four-point hole at 33-29 when Warren-Newsome sank all three of his free throw attempts when he was fouled with 0.4 showing on the clock.

The second half featured a series of runs where the Panthers would claw back into it, but eventually the Blackbirds would have an answer.

Finally, it was just too much Roy, scoring 16 of his 27-point total in the second half, while adding six more in the overtime period.

The Panthers had the deficit down to one possession at both 60-58 and 62-60, but a 10-4 LIU Brooklyn spurt forced a timeout at the 4:38 mark with the scoreboard reading 72-64.

Sessoms then hit a layup and Roy converted all three of his free throws to swing momentum back to the home side. Down five with just over a minute to play, Warren-Newsome made a layup and Roy made 1-of-2 from the line following an LIU miss to get it to 76-74. Warren-Newsome then played the hero role, picking off the pass and sending the game to OT.

Milwaukee finished the evening shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, which included 52.9 percent after intermission. In addition, following nine first-half turnovers, the Panthers played the final 25 minutes of the contest adding just one more to the final total of 10.

MKE held the Blackbirds to 39.4 percent (26-of-66) from the floor, including just 15.2 percent (5-of-33) from long-distance. The visitors did win the rebounding battle, 43-40.

Up next, the Panthers remain home for next game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic, welcoming Albany following a few days off for Thanksgiving. The "Black Friday" affair is set to tipoff at 7 p.m. at UWM Panther Arena.
