Jackrabbits Slip Past Panthers In Season Opener

Panthers fall by a combined eight points

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee volleyball opened the 2017 season with a very narrow 3-0 loss to South Dakota State Friday afternoon from the Klotsche Center as part of the annual Pepsi Panther Invitational.

In both team's first action of the year, SDSU was able to do just enough late in matches, winning in a deceptive sweep with the two teams separated by just eight combined points over the three sets.

"It's the first match of the year," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "There were some jitters and some things we really haven't seen in preseason – we saw them today in this match. South Dakota State played to win – they were very loose and very competitive, and in turn we needed to push back and it just seemed to be a hard match for that.

"Getting to 23, 22 and 22, we were right there. It's just a matter of staying with them a little bit longer and pushing past."

Three Panthers registered double figure kills in the season opener, led by junior Caitlin Schultz with 18, while hitting a career-best .500 for the match. Sophomores Bridget Wallenberger (13) and Kylie Wilks (12) each also tallied double-digit kills to start things off.

Jenn Dore dished out 41 assists, while Mykie Olsen had a team-high 16 digs in her first match in the libero jersey.

The Panthers will get a chance to bounce back right away later tonight, taking on Idaho State in the second of both teams' three matches at the Panther Invitational, with first serve scheduled for 7:30 from the Klotsche Center.
