Fifth-Set Barrage Powers Panthers Past Bengals

Kalous hits a career-best .652

MILWAUKEEJess Kalous had a team-high 16 kills on a career-best .652 hitting performance to lead the Milwaukee volleyball team to a 3-2 win over Idaho State Friday night in the second match of the day as part of the Pepsi Panther Invitational inside the Klotsche Center.

The Panthers came out firing in the first but were forced to a fifth set by a scrappy Bengal squad. But, UWM was up to the task and got the fans on their feet in an impressive showing in the fifth for the 25-14, 20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-7 win.

"It feels great (to get the first win of the year)," Milwaukee head coach Susie Johnson said. "We were so much better than we were earlier today, which made such a difference. So many of our players, after that first match today, really thought about what they could change. We had a game plan and they stuck to it. We had to strategize within the match, because they (ISU) played very well, and our plan worked."

Kalous was one of three Panthers with double-digit kills in this one, joined by Caitlin Schultz and Bridget Wallenberger – each with 13.

Four Panthers tallied 10-plus digs in the win, headlined by senior libero Mykie Olsen with 19. Kylie Wilks added another 13, while freshman Kailynn Mongan had 11 in her first collegiate start and Lexie Uselding chipped in with 10.

After dishing out 41 assists in the morning match, Jenn Dore had another 47 assists in the night cap to go with eight digs in an impressive showing.

Milwaukee also had 11 digs – with four players registering at least three on the night – in a strong showing defensively.

"I think we had 30 more digs in this match than we did in the first match today," Johnson said. "We just really had a game plan of having a stronger and more-disciplined block so we could get more digs, and that seemed to work."

Abby Garrity led the way for Idaho State, registering a match-high 19 kills to go with her 13 digs and two blocks.

Milwaukee jumped all over ISU in the opener, hitting .526 as a team while holding the Bengals to negative hitting. In fact, the opening set was tied at 9-9 early before the Panthers really got clicking, finishing things off on a 16-5 run.

After back-and-forth play, it all came down to a deciding fifth set. Milwaukee was more than ready.

UWM scored the first four points of the final frame and went ahead 9-2 after kills from Kalous, Wilks and an ISU error. The Bengals were able to claw back to within 11-7, but Milwaukee sealed the deal with four straight to end the night with their first win of the young season.

The Panthers return to the court Saturday for their final match in the Panther Invitational – a 1:30 pm contest against Virginia Tech.
