MILWAUKEE - Austin Schulfer tied the school record with 13 strikeouts and every starter in the lineup had at least one hit as the Milwaukee baseball team toppled Oakland University, 10-3, Sunday afternoon at Miller Park.
Â
"It's a pleasure to be able to get our guys in here and play in this venue – it's just an awesome experience," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Schulf came out with electric stuff, you could tell early on. He put up a couple of zeroes and we busted loose with three or four hits in a row and put up some crooked numbers. He worked ahead in the count, had a good slider going … he did a good job."
Â
The Panthers (16-25, 6-13 Horizon League) trailed the Golden Grizzlies (10-31, 7-12 Horizon League) for the third day in a row, yet once again pulled out the victory to complete the weekend conference sweep. Today the offense was also the star, scoring nine runs in the fifth and sixth inning combined to open up the contest.
Â
After watching the Brewers post a 4-3 victory over the Braves, Schulfer (5-4) equaled the school record held by four others (Aaron Sorenson, Eric Semmelhack, Ben Stanczyk, Korey Keller). His 13
th victim came against the final batter he faced to close out the seventh inning.
Â
"We circle the one in Arizona against the Brewers and circle this one for sure," Doffek said about playing in Miller Park. "It's really a joy to be able to get in here and it's just a great experience."
Â
Schulfer K'd two batters in three of the first four innings and got to nine when he struck out the side in the fifth. He recorded No. 10 and 11 in the sixth and then made it a dozen with out number one in the seventh. After a groundout, he whiffed Zach Sterry to end the seventh and put his name in the record book.
Â
Down 2-1, Milwaukee batted around in the fifth to take momentum, sending 11 batters to the plate in scoring five runs on six hits.
Chris Kelly tied the game at 2-2 and
Trevor Schwecke's double drove in a pair and made it 4-2.
John Boidanis and
Ian Ross each came up clutch with two-out base hits that knocked in runs.
Â
It was more in the sixth. The team again batted around, with the merry-go-round producing RBI's from
Ben Chally (2-RBI double), Boidanis and
Mike Jordahl.
Â
Kelly led the 14-hit attack with a 3-for-5 day, scoring twice. Chally was 2-for-4 with 2 RBI and three runs scored, while Boidanis and Jordahl recorded identical 2-for-4/2 RBI lines.
Â
Schwecke added a tremendous diving catch to keep Oakland off the board for out No. 3 in the third, laying out into center field with a tremendous effort.
Â
Jake Sommers pitched the final two frames, also adding another record. He fanned four more, giving the UWM staff 17 strikeouts for the day to break the team mark of 16.
Â
UWM will get one day off before hitting the road next, traveling to play Illinois State Tuesday. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m.
