CHICAGO, Ill. - The Milwaukee baseball team started quickly and then scored in each inning from the fourth through eighth in cruising to a 15-1 victory over Chicago State Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (10-19) limited the Cougars (7-22) to just four hits on the day, as seven different pitchers combined to hold the opponent scoreless until the eighth inning.
Â
Cole Heili,
Ian Ross and
Joe Vyskocil each pounded home runs to highlight the offensive display.
Â
Ben Chally went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Heili finished 3-for-5 (2 RBI/2 runs), Ross ended the day with two hits and three runs scored.
Â
"It was nice to have a day where we got contributions from up-and-down the lineup," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "It was great to have a chance to get everyone out on the field and hopefully will be the momentum we need to carry over into the league series this weekend with Youngstown."
Â
The hits kept coming, with the team collecting a season-high 16 to go along with a season-high tying 15 runs. The team also displayed a good eye at the plate, drawing 14 walks.
Â
Chris Kelly went 2-for-3 with two RBI and
Daulton Varsho was 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs batted in. He also walked three times to reach base safely in all six at bats, extending his streak to 11 consecutive at-bats (6 hits/5 walks) on base.
Â
Adam Reuss (2-3) picked up the win, pitching the first two innings on a prearranged starting assignment. He allowed just one base hit, walking none and striking out a pair in leaving with a 5-0 lead.
Â
The Panthers put up that early five-spot to set the tone for the afternoon. Chally singled to start the inning before Heili and Ross went back-to-back with long balls to make it 3-0 quickly. A double-play ball scored another and Varsho's triple to the wall in right center made it 5-0.
Â
Alex Fischer (2.0 IP/1 K),
John Moynihan (1.0 IP/1 K),
George Swedie (1.0 IP/1 K),
Matt Vanek (1.0 IP) and
Jake Sommers (1.0 IP/1 K) all contributed scoreless appearances.
Â
After 29 games on the road, the Panthers finally get the chance to play a home game next, opening a three-game Horizon League series Thursday. Milwaukee and Youngstown State get underway at 3 p.m. at Henry Aaron Field.
