Phoenix Outlast Milwaukee In Semifinal

Panthers still hopeful for postseason berth

DETROIT – A one possession game until the final seconds, Green Bay was able to do just enough in the closing moments to fend off the Milwaukee women's basketball team upset bid, 66-59, Monday afternoon in the Horizon League Tournament Semifinals from Joe Louis Arena.

Milwaukee (20-11) was neck-and-neck with the two-time defending champion Phoenix (26-5) right to the end before GB went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the waning moments to advance to Tuesday's tournament championship.

"We knew this was going to be a very physical game," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "A lot of credit goes to Green Bay and a lot of credit goes to (Green Bay guard) Jen Wellnitz. I thought she was incredible and the best player on the court today. She made things happen.

"The cause of the loss really comes down to our turnovers. It was such a close game and we allowed 29 points off our turnovers. I'm not sure there's a team in our league we can beat when doing that.

"I'm trying not to let the emotion come into it right now. I think when you have a 20-win season that there is definitely hope for the postseason, whether that's the WNIT or the WBI. I'm really trying to channel all my energy into the fact that hopefully some committee sees us as a valuable program."

Jenny Lindner posted her second-straight double-double in the league tournament with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Steph Kostowicz led all scorers with 16 points and Alexis Lindstrom also scored in double digits with 10 points to go with four rebounds.

The Panthers also go 18 points off the bench in Monday's semifinal. Kelsey Cunningham repeated her stat line from one day earlier with seven points, while Lizzie Odegard scored six and Jaye Two Bears provided instant offense with five points on 2-2 shooting in just six minutes.

Wellnitz led Green Bay in scoring, tying her career high with 15 points to go with seven rebounds, six assists and four steals.

It all came down to the final seconds.

Trailing by seven with just under four minutes to play, Lindstrom cut the lead with a big three from the corner to make it 59-55. After a Green Bay layup, Milwaukee answered right back with a bucket by Kostowicz. The Panthers then forced a turnover and got another two points from Kostowicz to cut things to just 61-59 with 2:03 remaining.

The Panthers forced a contested shot that bounced out but GB was able to corral the loose-ball rebound and then finished the game by making five of six free throws to claim the win.

In the beginning, Milwaukee came out slowly, falling down 10-2 not even four minutes into the game.

After Rechlicz called a timeout, her team responded in a big way with a 23-9 run that stretched into the second quarter to go up 25-19 after a three-pointer by Cunningham.

Green Bay answered in the back-and-forth game and got a three-pointer from Sam Terry just before the buzzer to take a 37-31 lead into the break.

The Panthers continued to inch closer in the third. A jumper by Cunningham cut the lead to just two late in the period and UWM outscored GB in the third to cut the lead to just 48-45 after 30 minutes.

A pair of free throws by Kostowicz to start the fourth made it a one-point game. After four-straight by the top seed, Two Bears was inserted into the game and instantly contributed with a cold-blooded three from the top of the key, followed by a runner in the lane to keep things close until the final minutes.

The two teams were incredibly even in the shooting department, both finishing with a 43 percent effort overall and right around 35 percent from behind the arc.

Milwaukee's bench outscored Green Bay's 18-9 and the battle down low was a good one with GB finishing with a slight edge in points in the paint at 36-24.
