DAYTON, Ohio - The Milwaukee baseball team saw its pitching staff allow runs in just one inning on the day, but could never get the offense going in a 4-0 loss to Wright State at Saturday Nischwitz Stadium.
Â
The Panthers (7-14, 0-6 Horizon League) blanked the Raiders (15-7, 6-0 Horizon League) in all but the third inning, where a four-run rally provided the difference on the afternoon.
Â
"Just another tough one," Milwaukee head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We let one inning get away from us and that was the game. Another very good pitching effort from their kid. We barreled a bunch of balls, but couldn't get anything to drop."
Â
Scoreless into the third, the Raiders opened the frame with three straight hits. Two more base knocks drove in the third and fourth runs with just one out. A strike-'em-out/throw-'em-out double play got UWM out of the jam, but the offense struggled to find an answer from there.
Â
Milwaukee recorded just a pair of hits on the day, with
Billy Quirke singling in the third and
John Boidanis adding a single in the fourth.
Â
"We need to stay positive and keep working," Doffek said. "It will also be good to finally get off the road and play at home."
Â
Zane Collins (3-2) was very good for WSU, allowing those two hits in 7.0 innings of work. He walked one and struck out seven.
Â
Jay Peters (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season for UWM, allowing four runs in 4.0 innings, walking two while adding five K's.
Â
The bullpen efforts of
Brandon Parr (2.0 IP/0 R/1 H),
Alex Fischer (1.0 IP/0 H) and
Jake Sommers (1.0 IP/1 H/0 R) were brilliant to close out the day.
Â
Up next, the home opener is finally here, as the Panthers welcome UIC to Henry Aaron Field for a three-game series. The first pitch of game one is set for Friday at 2 p.m.
