Panthers Unable To Hold Off Mavericks

League play starts next week

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington scored five unanswered runs to turn a three-run deficit into an 8-5 victory Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark, claiming the weekend series by a count of two games to one.

The Panthers (7-8) built a 4-0 lead and seemed to be in control. The Mavericks (8-8) got back into it with three runs in the fourth inning and turned the tables with a five-spot in the seventh – the final three coming across of the unearned variety.

Chris Kelly finished with two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Ben Chally added two hits and scored twice and Dylan Detert also added a multi-hit outing, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

John Boidanis and Billy Quirke also recorded runs batted in.

Easton Johnson (4-for-5) and Will Olson (3-for-5) had big days for UTA.

The Panthers jumped ahead, 1-0, in the second inning and doubled the advantage on Detert's RBI-double in the second. UWM then made it 4-0 when Kelly laced a big two-out single to right field that chased home two more runners.

The Mavs made it a game in their half of the fourth, striking for three runs to make it a 4-3 game. Daulton Varsho then singled and came home courtesy of Boidanis and UWM looked to be back in control.

That all changed in the seventh after UTA chased Jay Peters. An error did not help, but the bullpen still had the game tied at 5-5 with two outs when RJ Williams came through in the clutch, emptying the bases with a double to left center that made it 8-5.

Milwaukee did try and rally in the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate with just one out. A foul out and fly ball to left ended it, however.

Peters went 6.0-plus innings, walking one and striking out four in allowing five runs. Clayton Uselman (0-1) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run.

Up next, the Panthers remain on the road, opening Horizon League play with a three-game series at Northern Kentucky. Game one is set for Friday with a start time of 2 p.m. CST.
