Panthers Come Up Short At Oakland

Ford-Washington scores 22 in the loss

ROCHERSTER, Mich. – Playing its fifth-straight game away from home, Sierra Ford-Washington scored a game-high 22 points but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee women's basketball team fell to Oakland University Saturday afternoon, 77-63, from the O'rena.

"I thought our effort was actually very good even though it didn't result in a win or into us scoring more points," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We're not shooting the ball very well right now, which is something we're not used to. And we're still trying to figure out where we're at defensively. It's something, as a staff, we're preaching quite a bit…it just doesn't seem to be carrying over into the game right now."

Ford-Washington led Milwaukee (15-8, 7-5 Horizon) with 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including going 2-2 from behind the arc and 4-4 from the free-throw line. It marks the fourth-straight game she scored in double figures this season and the 15th time this season.

Steph Kostowicz scored 13 points to go with eight rebounds, while Jenny Lindner chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds and Bailey Farley added another seven points.

Three players scored in double figures for Oakland, led by Taylor Gleason with 20.

A close game early, Oakland (13-10, 7-5 Horizon) used a big run early in the third quarter to jump its lead to 13 at 52-39.

Milwaukee responded in a big way, buckling down defensively for its best stretch of the game when it mattered most. Coupled with numerous defensive stops, UWM was finally able to get into an offensive rhythm. Lindner started things with back-to-back layups followed by a bucket by Kelsey Cunningham.

Kostowicz then hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to five at 52-47 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. After a pair of points by OU, Farley answered right back with a jumper of her own to keep the deficit at five.

The Golden Grizzlies were able to connect on back-to-back threes and carried a 62-53 lead into the final frame.

Oakland shot over 50 percent from the floor in the final 10 minutes and went on a 15-4 run to pull away late inside the O'rena.

Milwaukee finally returns home for its final home stand of the season starting Thursday by welcoming Youngstown State to the Klotsche Center at 7 pm.
