Third Quarter Cold Spell Sinks Milwaukee

Akaylah Hayes big off the bench

DAYTON, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's basketball team led at the break but couldn't overcome a cold-shooting third quarter as Wright State did just enough down the stretch for a 62-52 win Sunday from the Nutter Center.

The Panthers (19-10, 11-7 Horizon) had a chance to play spoiler as WSU (23-7, 15-3 Horizon) was fighting for its first-ever regular season league title in program history. The Raiders thrived under the pressure though, shooting nearly 70 percent from the floor in the third quarter and went on a 17-0 run in that frame to build a lead it would never relinquish.

"Huge credit to (Wright State) coach (Katrina) Merriweather and her staff for the season that they've had. They are definitely deserving of this honor," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "I thought we came in and really battled tonight. Our intensity, our effort, our enthusiasm for one another was excellent. We just didn't finish in certain aspects."

Jenny Lindner led Milwaukee with 17 points and nine rebounds despite playing in foul trouble for the majority of the game.

Steph Kostowicz added another 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Alexis Lindstrom was limited to just three points but corralled a career-high eight rebounds.

For the second-straight game, Akaylah Hayes was big off the bench – scoring just two points, but also grabbing four rebounds and one steal while playing tough defense.

Jaye Two Bears also had a solid showing in limited minutes, making her only shot to help provide another spark off the bench.

Four Raiders scored in double figures in their final home contest, led by Lexi Smith with 21.

It was a battle right from the start, with both teams trading shots in the early going as WSU claimed a 17-15 lead after one.

After an 8-0 spurt gave Wright State a 26-19 edge midway through the second, the Panthers responded with an 8-0 run of their own on four straight buckets in the paint to claim a 27-26 lead into the break.

Coming out of the break, the Panthers scored the first two points of the half on a pair of free throws by Kostowicz. From there, UWM went ice cold while Wright State could do no wrong. The Raiders rattled off a 21-2 run that spanned nearly eight minutes while shooting 69.2 percent in the third quarter alone to build a 47-31 lead.

Milwaukee did what it could to battle back, cutting the deficit to just six after a big three from Lindstrom with 2:03 to play. But the Panthers could get no closer as WSU made its free throws down the stretch to claim a share of the 2016-17 regular season title.

UWM outrebounded the Raiders, 39-29, but committed an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers Sunday – the most since the same amount in the second game of the year.

The Panthers now head into Motor City Madness as the No. 5 seed and will take on fourth-seeded Oakland on Sunday at 1:30 pm Central Time from Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
