Raiders Sneak Past Panthers In Heavyweight Bout

Lindner, Kostowicz each post double-doubles in narrow loss

DAYTON, OhioJenny Lindner and Steph Kostowicz both turned in double-doubles but it wasn't enough as the Milwaukee women's basketball team fell just short in a back-and-forth battle at Wright State's Nutter Center Saturday, 56-51.

In a showdown between a pair of Mid-Major Top-25 teams that did not disappoint, the Panthers (10-4, 1-1 Horizon) led by one with under two minutes remaining but the Raiders (10-4, 1-1 Horizon) were able to do just enough at home down the stretch for the narrow win.

"I thought defensively we came out with a great mentality today and that our team was really locked into the scout, especially after a one-day turnaround," Milwaukee head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "We came out with a level head about ourselves and a lot of energy, we just couldn't get our offensive flow going tonight."

Jenny Lindner returned to the lineup after the first missed game of her career with an impressive showing, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds for her 15th career double-double.

Steph Kostowicz also had a double-double with a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds to go with a season-high five blocks.

Jamie Reit got to the free throw line often to finish with seven points and a career-high nine rebounds, while Bailey Farley also added nine boards – also a career high.

"I could talk about (our rebounding) for days," Rechlicz said. "After the Northern Kentucky game (Milwaukee's first lost rebounding battle of the year) we kind of got on our team pretty hard about not rebounding the basketball. They went in with a very different mentality tonight and really hit the boards hard. I was really impressed with where we were at."

Alyssa Fischer was once again big off the bench for UWM, finishing with nine points and two assists.

Chelsea Welch led all players with 21 points to go with nine rebounds and five assists for Wright State.

Down by as many as 11 early in the second half, Milwaukee didn't flinch and cut the gap to just one heading into the fourth quarter after Fischer drilled three triples in the frame – including two on back-to-back possessions to close out the third.

A three by Lindner at the 4:54 mark in the fourth tied the game at 47-all and Milwaukee took its first lead since early in the second quarter on a nice feed from Reit to find a streaking Lindner with 3:48 to play.

After Wright State answered, UWM answered right back with Reit getting to the line yet again for a pair of free throws to go back up 51-50 with 2:02 left on the clock.

The Raiders were able to find a way on their next three possessions – including a pair of contested jumpers by Welch – and Milwaukee couldn't connect on their final two chances in what proved to be the different between two of the conference's preseason heavyweights.

"At the end of the game, Chelsea Welch – she's just an incredible player," Rechlicz said. "We knew she was going to drive left – we had that scouted. I thought (McKaela Schmelzer) did a good job of contesting that and Ryaen (Johnson) came over and she just hit a tough shot. That's the name of the game – especially when you're on the road."

Milwaukee finished with an emphatic 49-37 edge in rebounds against a Wright State squad that came into the game ranked 32nd in the nation in rebounding margin at +9.2. The Panthers also held WSU to just 33.8 shooting from the floor after they came into the game averaging 44.4 percent – 51st best in the nation.

Up next – the Panthers wrap up their four-game road trip with a short drive up I-43 next Saturday to take on in-state rival Green Bay at 1pm from the Kress Center.
