MILWAUKEE - Brett Prahl led five players in double-figures with 15 points on a perfect shooting night to lead the Milwaukee men's basketball team to a 92-64 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran College Thursday night at the Klotsche Center.
"I thought our tempo didn't pick up until the latter part of the first half and into the second half and we stretched it out from there," head coach
Pat Baldwin said. "So I am encouraged by how we are moving and getting up and down the floor and scoring with the opportunities that we are given, but I think the flow can be a lot better."
The Panthers shot 50.7 percent from the floor and slowly pulled away from the Warriors by halftime in the exhibition contest.
Prahl finished 5-for-5 from the floor and 5-for-5 from the line to record his 15 points, adding six rebounds and five assists.
Brock Stull had 14 points, five rebound and four steals.
Jeremy Johnson finished with 12 points and both
Bryce Nze and
Bryce Barnes chipped in 11 as all five starts were in double-figures.
Jeremiah Bell chipped in seven points, eight boards and three assists in just 19 minutes of playing time.
Collin Kennedy paced WLC with 19 points and seven rebounds. Chase Nowak added 18.
"We have to shore up our defense," Baldwin said. "We really have to square up our defense. Our intensity level, we have to raise that up more as well. We're going to really concentrate on that defensive end to make sure we are sound there."
Milwaukee raced out to a 16-7 lead, but could not pull away early. The lead was back down to just one at 18-17, but UWM took advantage of its height inside to stem the tide. An 11-2 run, spurred by five points in the paint from Prahl and a pair of 3's pushed the lead to double-digits for the first time at 29-19, with UWM eventually leading by 13 at the break.
The Panthers connected on 54.1 percent from the floor in the second, but still only held a 13-point lead at 61-48 with just over 11 minutes remaining.
Milwaukee took over in the final 10 minutes, scoring 18 points in a row to build its advantage to as many as 34 – taking the score from 66-50 to 84-50 with just over five minutes to play on a three-pointer by
Carson Warren-Newsome.
For the game, the Panthers connected on 36-of-71 (50.7) from the floor, adding a 13-16 showing at the line. WLC finished the night at 43.5 percent (27-62). The rebounding edge went to the home team, 43-31, with Milwaukee outscoring its opponent in the paint by a 54-24 margin. It also turned 21 turnovers into 27 points.
Up next, the regular season gets underway next Friday, with the Panthers hosting UW-La Crosse at UWM Panther Arena. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
